VW Golf 2 Restoration

Post by Craig Sheldon »

Hi All,

My wife recently surprised me by buying back my 1989 Golf 2 Gti which I sold 10 years ago, following our relocation to Jhb. Unfortunately the previous owner did not take very good care of it as I did when I owned it for 6 years.

It was transported up by a car carrier and is now in my garage was there a number of issues, including rust on the under carriage, tight/faulty steering rack etc, not forgetting the fact that previous owner also blow the original engine and the fitted a 1.4 Carb engine to the Car.

I now want to restore her to her former glory and therefore looking for recommendations for a ground up restoration. Please advise based personal recommendations....I'm based in Weltevredenpark in Jhb.

Many Thanks!

Hi Craig,

Are you looking at doing the restoration yourself? Or are you looking for a shop to get it all done? The latter being quite pricey and both requiring parts that are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

I am currently restoring my MK2 and it is quite a lengthy process (obviously time and budget dependent).

I was going to ask the same if it will be self done or taken to a shop.

My apologies for not being specific, I am looking for recommendations for Service Providers i.e Panelbeaters, specialist VW Mechanics & Auto Electricians, Auto Trimmers etc. I unfortunately cannot carry out any of this work myself.

@ Kirshen, do you perhaps have an indication on costs at this stage of your restoration?

@175 SBU, do you know of a one stop for a complete restoration?

I wish there was a one-stop shop... That would make life so much easier... But there are many individual establishments that received great reviews and come highly recommended.

I have not calculated the actual spend as yet, but Im in at around R10k and I haven't even completed the interior or respray as yet :fear:

Thank you so much for the feedback, I sincerely appreciate it! My car is very sentimental, so I am willing to spend what it takes to restore her.

@Kirshen - if you don't mind me asking, what exactly cost you R10k?

@175SBU, thank you, I appreciate you doing that...

Not at all. So I bought a replacement motor (for the time being until I find the motor I want) and needed to get it fitted and wired up. The labour costs in doing that pretty high so we did a lot of the work ourselves. But in saying that, lots of the little electrical components needed replacing, wearing parts (clutch, distributor etc.) and then the exterior parts tend to be very pricey. New bumpers, lights, indicators, grill, new carb, interior bits.

Its the smaller things that rack up the costs.

You could contact Gerardo Cammarata (Forum name - Pitzi-NC) for more info.

He cleaned up a MK2 GTi recently and probably found some places to get certain aspects of the car sorted.
