VW caravelle 2.3i 2002 model

Post by Makay »

Hi Guys,
I'm new member and I need help. I have just acquired a 2.3 Caravelle (2002 model) that has been parked for the past 5-6 years. At the beginning of this year we did an oil, plugs, filters change and cranked her. She battles to idle and when you manage to get her to run there is some sort of misfire. I have driven this this vehicle for 180km to East London on its first major run and all was sort of well when revs are above 2300 rpm.On inspection we found out that she sprays a bit too much fuel at start up and then at some point run well and then the misfire comes through. Should we be looking at the common rail, injectors, fuel pump or computer box?

Cheers

Look at taking the bus to an expert fuel injection mechanic,

Diagnosing the problem via a forum with so little info is difficult. The fact that the vehicle stood for many years is also something that is a big part of its problems.

For example the fuel tank is probably full of rust flakes and dirt inhibiting fuel flow. The same dirt is destroying the fuel pump decreasing fuel flow and pressure. Grease inside the throttle actuator could be hardened reducing its ability to control idle speed. Sensors can be dirty and covered in evaporated fuel sludge from petrol that was lying in the inlet manifold for so long. Injectors are blocked and no longer atomizing the fuel into vapour which is needed for proper combustion.

This is a basic outline of the problems that you might have with the bus. All this and more must be systematically checked and eliminated at potential faults until it runs right.

Some special tools and equipment is needed to do the necessary testing and fault finding.

Go see an expert.

Agree with Missioner and he has given you detailed useful information.

Were they k-jet or digifant. Cannot for the life of me recall what the 2.3 used. But yeah , fuel pump either way will be a suspect and I would have changed that upfront.

I speak under correction, but I think the 2.3 and 2.6 were Digifant, while the 2.5 was K(E)-Jetronic.

This one has O-rings for attachment to the head. If I'm not mistaken that would make it K-jet???

Easiest way to spot K-Jet is the larger rubber snorkel from the air flap to the inlet manifold, and on top of the air flap is the fuel distributor with braided lines that go to the individual injectors.

You can't attach images directly. You have to upload them to a host and then link them here using the image tag (without the asterisk):

They were in fact MP9. The EFI in the T3 was upgraded along with the Golf 3 facelift which also received the same treatment on the motors.
