Advice on Golf 2

Post by Schpleegz »

Hi guys.
Trust you all well.

I need some advice please.

I have a golf 2 gti 1.8 8v running a diktator.
I use the car daily to work and back and she’s been running well for quite some time now.
However on Saturday morning, the starter dragged a bit at first start up. Sounded like the battery was dying. The rest of the day it was fine.
Then the same on Sunday.
On Monday it was fine though. Started on the turn everytime and didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary.

However last night while driving she jerked once under load. Then she was fine again for about 5kms till she started dying off slowly. She didn’t respond to the accelerator until she completely died.
At first I thought it was just the battery cos everything was dead. No lights, no hooter, no swing at all on the starter.

We tried jump starting it with my dad’s bakkie but it just swung and refused to actually take. Sounded as if it wasn’t getting fuel.

So we checked a few things:
There is fuel coming through the fuel lines.
There is spark on all 4 leads and from the coil.
Coil is not hot or getting hot at any time.
But all the plugs are dry when we pulled them out.
We tried putting a few drops of fuel into the throttle body and it starts but dies as it runs out of fuel.

So battery is still dead and I can’t check anything else for now.
I will try and get a new battery today or so.

But What I need help with is if the car doesn’t start with a new battery, cos it didn’t start with the jumper cables, what do I check next?

Does a dead battery affect the diktator and it’s settings?
What else could cause the injectors not to open or not get fuel so randomly cos she has been running well for quite some time now.

All advice will be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Schpleegz

If the battery has an internal short it can even draw enough power to stop it from putting out enough even while jumped.
Try another battery first and then take it from there. Is the pump runing?

No cam sensor on a dicktator. Crank sensor work because there is spark.

Is it still kjet or efi?

If it us still kjet it could be the fuel pump or related problems like fp relay or crap in the tank or fuel lines.

Think the dictator should just run ignition related if you have the kjet.... Could be wrong.

Thanks guys for all the responses.

Had to leave the car at my folks place last night so I will check the blue wire as soon as I get access to the car again.

@Panic... thanks. I will try the new battery and let you know.
When you speak about pump, are you referring to fuel pump.

@Dubrox... no it’s not kjet anymore. Runs on Diktator only.

Re: Advice on Golf 2

Post by Schpleegz »

So i fitted a new battery this morning and no luck.
Also checked the blue wire on the alternator and it’s still connected quite firm.

The fuel pump is priming. But She is just swinging. Still sounds like no fuel is getting to the plugs.

I tried connecting the dictator to my pc but it’s not picking up. So took the dictator out and will try to connect to it while at work (not sure if I can connect to it while it’s out of the car).

What I also noticed this morning is that when I switch the ignition on then only the red light on the dictator is on. Shouldn’t the green light also be on or flash or something?

Thanks

Green and amber lights should flash during cranking, then you will have soark output and injector pulses.

If not flashing start by checking the hall sensor in distributor. The cranking rpm needs to be higher than 220-280rpm.

If there is spark it means the dictator is seeing the input trigger.
You cannot connect a dictator without it seeing a 12v source. Ie it's not powered by the computer. Only xms does that.

I will probably give you a call or msg you later to find out your availability and plan to get the car to you.

Someone made a comment that since I tried boosting my car with another car, there’s a high possibility that I blew the injector module on the dicktator. Could that perhaps be the case?

I also connected my pc to it earlier and noticed that all the screens have an “error” msg under air. Is that normal because the breather pipe from the unit is left unplugged in the engine bay?

Here are a few screenshots of the dicktator SW this morning.

Oh and one more thing.
I opened the Dizzy when I was checking the hall sensor and noticed a green powdery residue on the inside... never noticed that on previous openings.

Can’t see your pictures. Must be the slow and very small internet bandwith here offshore. Too many guys using internet.

“Error” message under air would be present if no air temp sensor is connected to ecu. Don’t stress about it. Water temp is taken into account on ecu and air temp too, but lots of guys don’t connect the air temp sensor ad just zero all air temp compensation values on ecu settings.
