Hi guys can I swap the 1.3 4 speed gearbox with a 5 speed gearbox from a 1989 jetta 2 1.6 5 speed gearbox? If so would it be a straight swop out or would I have to change some parts from 1 gearbox to fit the other?
Would appreciate the replies
Thanks

Re: golf 1 1993 4 speed gearbox
Yes, you can. You will also need the rear 5 speed gearbox mounting at the battery side, gear links, the arm that fit on the shaft from underneath the car, possibly inner CV’s as the diameter is 100mm and currently 90mm on 4 speed, plastic gear that fit in the gearbox on gearbox cable. Clutch and pressure plate and flywheel upgrade to 210mm from 190mm.

Find the code of the gearbox from the jetta first.
Also 1989 would be an old gearbox
As for the shift linkages they can be modified rather than replaced so long as you can measure cut and weld XD
