Clipper 2.0l 16v Abf 20v throttles. Help with Dicktator Downunder
Hey guys from Downunder. I just completed my build in my MK1 Clipper. 2.0L 16v Abf with 20v throttles.
Running:
- 276 cams (intake and exhaust side are the same)
- Uprated valve springs and lifters
- Dicktator STD with wiring loom from 8v Performance
- KR 4 window dizzy (brand new)
- Stock Abf single tower coilpack
- Stock 20v 330cc injectors
- Head ported and polished
- Race headers from 8v Performance
- Brand new 10.4mm Auto tech leads
- Brand new fuel lines
We are struggling Downunder to get this car tuned. Car starts... We have the timing close to spot on. The car seems to be running rich atm and we are struggling to get idle even after adjusting the idle screw. Backfiring from the throttle side. Running very rough.
We managed to get it running OK but only over 1500rpm anything under that the car stalls. But seems we have lost this map. Because we can't get it to run like that again.
Can anyone help sharing a Dicktator map to get it close to running so we can dyno the car and fine tune it? I have been trying the stock maps that came with the dicktator. And a map that a friend provided but was not for throttles.. I have no idea what settings are suitable.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks
Azgar

You need a tuner who knows how to setup that ecu and motor setup.

Re: Clipper 2.0l 16v Abf 20v throttles. Help with Dicktator Downunder
I see four problems with your info given.
1. "We have timing close to spot on",
2. "Backfiring from the throttle side",
3. "running OK over 1500 RPM" and
4. "But it seems we have lost the map".
You will need to calibrate the timing and it describes in the Dicktator manual how to do it. You set the first 4 blocks to 20 degrees and shoot it with a timing light at 2000 RPM and once timing marks are spot on, your timing is calibrated and then you can change the timing down.
Your timing is definitely off if it is backfiring through the throttle side. If running OK over 1500 RPM it could most likely be timing (when back firing through the throttle) or when it dies below 1500 RPM due to starving on fuel / needing more fuel on the lower part of the map. Are all timing marks lining up on pulleys?
Post a snapshot of your main setup page, timing and fuel maps (numerical values) and then we can assist.
If you don't come right, PM me your email address and WhatsApp number and I can send you a map to start up.

I installed a dictator in a mk1 clipper over September last year.. Brisbane side .. also an abf.. maybe you know the car- part of queensland cartel ...
his car has a tuned map-was tuned that side,,
you sure your cam timing is right ? tps is tps so the fact that you using throttles wont make a big difference in start up ...

Recieved this from akclipper in first week of July. This is still on the startup map I have sent him, which needs tuning and no exhaust fitted (only exhaust manifold). Fuel values at idle are still a bit low.

Is this tuned in now??
Will this be show cased in the worldwide dyno wars on the 2nd of December? I see CPI Australia is also mentioned to partake.

Re: Clipper 2.0l 16v Abf 20v throttles. Help with Dicktator Downunder
Hi All, apologies for the the 5 month delay! I have not had a chance to touch the car for ages due to work and business, etc..
I had some issues with the adaptor plate used to bolt the ITB to the head. The main water outlet was blocked off initially and was causing overheating. The water was not flowing back out the head to the overflow bottle. This is now fixed. The adaptor plate and ITBs are now refitted (just did it last night).

The car is starting but is still a little rough. And I'm struggling to get it to idle. @papajo provided me a map that is closest to allow me to now double check timing, etc. Thank you so much PapaJo. I will contact you via WhatsApp soon, my number has changed.
Everything else is pretty much complete. Exhaust fitted, seats mounted, new steering, most of the electrics are ok. Gear shifter is spot on. New clutch cables and accelerator cables fitted.
A few more things to go...
1. Hooking up RPM source to instrument cluster - Bit confused on this one. I have the stock MK1 Cabrio cluster. I have an RPM lead from the Dicktator, or do i just take it from the coilpack or distributor? Either-way I still don't know how to wire it to the cluster? Any ideas?
2. My brakes are crap atm. I think it might be the vacuum line that I have on the ITB. Need to test that it is working. I have only managed to drive it up the road. I also have a MK4 rear disc brake setup to install (might be months away)
3. Radiator thermostat needs to be fitted and wired up to new fans.
I do need to have the car complete in a few weeks. The biggest VW show in Australia is coming up at the end of the month. So I would love to be there with the car. http://www.clubvw.org.au/2018shownshine..... I did win best cabrio in 2015 (don't know how?) and my cousin won best MK2 http://www.clubvw.org.au/2015-nationals-show-and-shine
I'll post up some more updates soon!

Re: Clipper 2.0l 16v Abf 20v throttles. Help with Dicktator Downunder
I’ll double check in the map I have sent you. Think your fuel at idle is a but low. Did you calibrate TPS or are you still using MAP. Where is the ecu vacuum line connected? You will need to set idle with the idle screw on itb’s too. Observe that the dot is in the middle of the crosshair.
Do you have the Dicktator software guide? There is explanation in there about the cross hair and what to do to get the dot in the centre.
You’ve got my number and can contact me. Back in Brazil at work.
The tacho output, pin 4 on ecu can be connected to the tacho signal wire originally connected to the round coil negative.

Forgot to ask, how is water pipes routed now? Did you revert back to port on the front of motor?

Re: Clipper 2.0l 16v Abf 20v throttles. Help with Dicktator Downunder
Yes. The plate between the head and ITBs was cut to go around the front water neck. Initially I blocked that outlet off. But the water was just not circulating back into the overflow bottle. It was boiling over.
Photo of the plate here: https://azgarkak.wixsite.com/mk12lo/ful ... e-jgpt81vu
There was some mods to do to make it work with the waterneck I have fitted
1. The bottom centre bolt hole needed to be cut off..image here: https://azgarkak.wixsite.com/mk12lo/ful ... e-jgpt81vu
2. The gasket that sits between the manifold and plate also needed to be trimmed.
3. The plate was not cut 100%, it was 1-2mm out and was hitting the top of the water neck on one side. I had to trim some of the plastic off the water neck too.
