1.6 carb Citi Golf not starting

Post by Citi Golfer »

Hi Guys.

I need some guidance please.
I have a 1.6 carburetor Citi Golf. She is not my daily driver..... I suppose she is in semi-retirement.
I have owned her for about 4 years now and she has never given me any problems.
Starts when I want to go for a drive and get me where I'm going and back again.

That is until this weekend.
She just doesn't want to start... The engine swings, but doesn't start.

Now I do the maintenance on the car myself. So I'm not a complete muppet with a spanner. But I suck with troubleshooting.
Can someone please give me the basic steps of what to check?

Thanks.
Nico.

Did you check for spark and fuel?

It's the little things that make them run right. Anybody can slap a basic bottom end together. that is the easy bit. It's all the little things that makes these builds a success or not.

No, By spark do you mean pull the plug leads and swing it to check?
And there is fuel in the plastic fuel filter in the engine bay.....

Check the ignition module its under that black cover where you access the wiper motor. Mine blew 2 of the TP100 variants in so many days. I have a TP900 B module in now took it off a '92 Jetta Cli. Hope this helps.

If there is genuinely spark and fuel, but no start, then there is
a) too little compression, i.e. a problem with the valve timing or mechanical condition of the engine, or
b) a problem with the spark timing.

If you check and/or reset the mechanical timing of the engine, if you then set the spark timing to its approximate window, if the spark reaches the plugs, and if there is reasonable compression, e.g. 5 bar or more, then any carburetor engine will start.

There could also be a problem with the carburetor. But when you say "there is fuel", I assume that fuel is not only present in the carb, but actually being drawn into the venturi.

One can check for fuel starvation by spraying some pilot spray into the air cleaner or carb. If the engine starts briefly, then the problem lies with the fuel supply.

Why would one do this if there is a spark?
