Current:
1997 Golf MK3 GSX (1.8 MP9)
Specs:
79.7kw at 5209rpm and 160nm at 4240rpm (Saichs Dyno)
Modifications:
Stock exhaust with one 50mm-57mm freeflow box.
Standard airbox
Standard cam
Ex: 1970 Beetle 1300 twin-port

@ Panic-mechanic ,...seems you know your stuff around these APK engines ,...I have some mechanical knowledge ,but complete newbie on the ECU side of things ,..wondering if you or anyone could help .
So I have removed the BGU 1.6 motor from my 2005 Caddy kombi to replace it with an APK/AQY 2.0. It looked like a straight fit but have run into some snags. 1.6 was pap so opted to get more torque from a 2.0 hence the APK as I am looking for reliability.
The issues I'm sitting with is that I can either flash the current ECU for Golf4 MAP or go aftermarket ECU ,... problem is that harnesses are different and I would like to keep the ETC whereas the APK was a manual one. You have any suggestions on what could be done here or what I need to look out for wrt other problems?

I'm looking to do the same conversion maybe next year, just for more torque. Everything thing should be a straight fit but I'm going to use my 1.6 bsf plastic intake on the 2.0 apk just cause it looks cleaner. I will be going with dastek uniQ for the fueling.

isn't the Mk3 originally Digifant? using an Air-Flow-Meter?

Digifant, Semos (sp), MP9, ME7 (in the VR), etc.

Hey bud ... so i got around to tuning mk3 ..it made 100 wheel kw and trust me it's awesome .I'm soon going 2l crank that a mate of mine so generously gave to me .Ansell wrote:Hey man.

And the best part is .a mk3 really gets more attention and far more appreciated then the mass produced golf 1.I have both mk3 and mk1 and the comfort levels can't be compared .
If u want a lil more of a laugh when driving ur car i believe the key is the head work I feel ..yes the 2l block and torque will be nice ... but I can tell you this much a 1800 is a far more rev happy engine which I find more fun to drive .

How zit gentle men i'm still new here, i also drive a Golf 3 1.6.. whoo hoo does not have the power my Audi have but at least it does not suck the juice that fast lol,correct me if i'm wrong a APK motor will be a straight fit in my Golf, will it bolt onto my gearbox as well and must i get a bigger clutch? I'm looking for a bit more power thats it, or just go for a 1.8 ( put in a 1.8 crank and pistons keep it carb)?

I think you are faced with the same question . How much power comes with a cost factor .on a normally aspirated engine it's generally more $$$$ to kw. yes bolts onto the same box . First look at the clutch when you take it out. Some mk3 already hade the 210 mm clutch setup even if it was a 1.6.

Dont even go that route. Had so many issues on this swap and the power/money spent ratio is terrible. Invest in an ABF swap and get it over and done with. (Or 8vT). Motor bought ar R8.5k, rebuilt (piston play bought at japan auto) cost another R4.8k, dictator ecu R3.5k, tuning installation to date cost me R5.2k and I am pulling 72kw (with a 276cam). Honestly so damn upset over this.

Coz to old school, and the guys that know how to sort them proper are to old as well so help would be hard to find
If I had a MK3, it would either need to have 1.8 16VT or 2.0 16VT.
2.0 8V in a MK3 would obviously be better if you running either 1.6 or 1.8 but don't be surprised when can't get a new school 1.6 (eg. Toyota Corolla) of your back.
