the one in the for sale section is not too bad, needs a little bit of work, will be a great project car.
already has a nice platform to stat from.

i stand to be corrected but an original one with k-jet etc. can get anywhere close to 40k upwards

i had the opportunity to buy my friends original mk1 gti for a steal but, i had already paid to go overseas.

R40k for an umolested 1.8 Kjet sounds good.
As soon as the motor is swapped for a 2e with dictator, to me it no longer is a GTI.

That's what I also think. Then it's a golf with a 2l conversion.

But we all know the price of a proper 2l conversion.
So price wise not bad if the body hasn't got any bad cancer.

Thanks

And to think they sold for under R8k new. Who knew that they would fetch that 35 years later.
Sorry but being the cheapskate I am there is no way I would pay that for a 30+ year old golf 1 as much as I like them.
Good luck with your buy.
For R40k it much be totally original and pristine without a single blemish.

zero mods, completely stock...Just had a Powerflow 50mm system and Brospeed branch. Not sure if you can consider that mods. Seats original, in mint condition, dashboard was mint, original glass, all trim was there. It ran like a champ and handled well after I fitted a 30mm H&R lowering kit! K-Jet also worked like a charm.

However I had it resprayed in the original colour as it was quite faded and had a few minor blemishes, so it was looking quite fresh.

That being said, would you pay the amount for the car?
Is it worth the 25?

You've seen it and know the condition based on what you saw. Your money. We haven't seen the car and its condition.

If K-Jet is still intact, Original seats and wheels, original DX code motor and 5 speed gearbox with no molestation to any body parts (including grille and taillights) in original colour may be worth that money, if you are a collector and want to keep it.

If you want to buy and need to fix up a bit and resell, you will end up losing money on this.

Thanks. Went to see it this afternoon. Not a bad base to build from. No cancer. Only the surface rust. Looking for something to restore and keep. But drive as well.

If the price was a bit less maby

Found something else, also checked it the afternoon

Thanks for all the advice

:iagree:

I mean, I love those cars... I drove an '83 GTS for many, many years and had endless fun, and also became quite emotionally attached to it. But if this purchase is about a daily, then 40k should actually buy you quite a lot of car (which I'm afraid a Mk1 isn't) - or, alternately, if it's about a collector's item, a Mk1 at this price should be pristine, in which case you wouldn't be using it as a daily anyway.

Ja, cheapskate here, too.

8K was about the selling price for the GTS. The first GTi's left the factory in late 1982. The GTi sold for around 10K in 1983.
I paid R9 990 for mine in June 83' (no extras - not even a radio!) and after discounts.

This was what it looked like circa 1986:

Image Image

Yes, a RED grille surround! Grille surround & red badge professionally done at my request;
Twin flip-top sunroof (manual);
BBS front spoiler and full bodykit;
14" Snowflake OEM mags imported from the USA on 185/60 x 14 Pirelli P7000's (it was a damn sight cheaper then than lately!)
Pioneer R/T combo and separate Graphics Equalizer (which I removed and I recently discovered that I still have the equalizer & 80W rear speakers);
Bosch foglights;
Perana louvre :oops:
Bosal full stainless steel exhaust (original diameter).

Sold it (traded it in for an A2 Jetta CLi) for R11K in November 1987. (Pic taken on Dealer's Used Car floor)

Image

This is what it was out on the floor for the same afternoon I parted with it - it was sold the very next day at opening time!

If only I had bought 2 (one for a daily and one for storage) :wink:

Most enjoyable car that I ever had, despite its faults (aerodynamics of a brick, rust - I had no garage for the first 2 years of ownership, 2 attempts to steal it, etc.) My SO also had a 1985 Jetta GLi for a few years (1993 to 1997).

Amazing photos, they are actually selling cheaper as when they where new.
If you take the inflation from 1984 and the Purchase price of 10 000 in 1983, that would be a purchase price of +/- R 140 000 for 2016.

Found another gti, but :puke: Thought when I saw the ad it was a gt fitted with a GTI motor. Until I looked closer
