Depends if it's a proper Mk1 or if it's a CTi.

GTi's sold from late 1982 till mid 1984 and then were replaced by the Mk2 GTi. The CTi was sold from 1987 through to 1995.
Many have been made to look like GTi's but are not original. Many early GTis were also made to look like 90's models, back then narrow bumpers weren't cool.
Lots of things are different between the cars. If you know anything about Golfs one can tell the difference.
An original, unmolested, unmodified GTi is somewhat scarce. They are becoming collectable, but are by no means rare. These are becoming sought after, like many 80's sports cars, but still sell for under R50k in nice nick. In another 10 years who knows.
