Constant Fuel Smell

Post by 8V Playa »

Hi Guys

I have a constant fuel smell around my car. i might have understood if I was driving a bit hard, but the smell is even there in the mornings before i start up my car. I have looked all around with the car switched off, with it idling but cannot find any leaks. The smell is strongest close to the fuel filter, so not sure if a filter swap might be the way to go.
• Might the filter be blocked?
• Might one of the pipes perhaps have a small hole in it?
• Car is at the moment not too heavy on fuel. I filled the car again this morning with 35L and got about 453KM since the last fill up (if my calculations are correct +-12.9km\l)
Car in question:
• 2005 Citi Life 1.6 with MP9 management

Thank You in advance

Hiya buddy. On the citi golfs, check the rubber fuel lines running to your fuel filter (in the engine bay) and from your fuel filter to the fuel rail. They have a nasty habit of perishing with age, and with these small cracks the fuel vapor escapes and leaves the engine bay smelling of fuel. Another thing you can do, is check all the hose clamps on the rubber pipes, make sure they're tight. All you need is a little bit of vapor blow by, and the whole engine bay will put you on a trip.

get it sorted. Most of petrol cars burning down are attributed to fuel leak vapours being ignited by the alternator or starter.

I have the same issue now with my velo, strangely is perished and started leaking only now in the 3 weeks it stood.
Should the normal rubber fuel lines from Midas be sufficient for handling the pressure of the FI?

It should keep you going for the time being, but I had the misfortune of having to change my fuel lines once a year, due to Midas stocking cheap rubber piping. Bought some decent pipes from GW Delarey a while back, and I must say they are doing a great job so far. :hi:

Just make sure to ask for high pressure fuel line. I buy my rubber piping from a hydraulic supplier, it's not that much more expensive.

The packaging states fuel injection fuel lines 8mm. They seem good quality so will have to se how long they last.
Running with a fire extinguisher in the velo and 2 in the jeep, you never know what might happen.

My citi had a hairline crack on the tank where the filler pipe connects. Check if any damp from the petrol there

Hi.
I am currently a proud new owner of a 1989 MK2 GTI.
I noticed that there is a heavy strong fuel smell. I inquired on the mods on the car and there is a 277 cam with 4 2 1 branches on.
Need advice on where to start checking could be the cause of the smell.

I once bought fuel line from Midas to have the entire system line changed- It was the motoquip brand if I remember correctly.

They lasted nearly four and a half years with me running race fuel & ethanol mixes.

There's nothing wrong with them if you ask me, but now since I'm going 100% methanol they will be changed to the Teflon type.
