No disrespect bud, but if you lift the throttle plate while it is idling, the car is going to rev up. Leave the car off. And leave the tb on the intake. Take the pipe off, grab a cloth, and spray the carb cleaner on the cloth, if it looks bad, spray the throttle and then wipe up, repeatedly. Then, with one hand opening the throttle plate, use your other hand with the cloth with carb cleaner sprayed on to clean underneath and on top of the throttle plate. Once it is clean, you're done. And by repeatedly wiping all the gunk and carb cleaner off of the throttle body, you will have minimal, if not any, entering your engine.

Please note, please let the engine cool down a bit before working on it. Unless you can move like the lord of the dance, you maybe want a cooler environment to work with.

Ok well got home early and did the following.

Cleaned engine. Had to rush it because it was getting dark.

Cleaned out throttle body and entire air filter system too.
Cleaned off Maf sensor with electrical cleaner.
Checked fuel filter. Confirmed its not blocked.

Assembled everything back together. Started car and revs sit at 2000 rpm. On the plus side its not cutting out anymore.

Do you guys think its best to get diagnostics done or is the something else I need to check.

Hey bud. That sounds like the tps on your throttle body. (Throttle position sensor) It doesn't know how far your throttle plate is opened. It sits in that black cover on the backside of your throttle body. You can try give it a clean, but be careful when you open that black cover, so that nothing falls out. (Dunno if something can fall out though). For this you'll have to take off the throttle body.

You can have your car scanned for errors. I can't remember if it throws out any errors, somebody here will be able to comment. Good luck bud. I paid R1300 for a new throttle body from GW close to two years back.

Ok this is weird. Last night after all the cleaning ran the car for about a minute. it was idleing high. switched off had a chow and went to bed.

This morning started the car . Idled high for about a minute and 30 sec. the idleing dropped to normal position.

I drove the golf all the way to kyalami not once did it give me the slightest issue. SHE IS DEFINATELY A SHE.

So lets wait and see what diagnostics give me or dont.

Thanks again guys

Hey man

I think its right to start high as the car is cold and as it gets warmer , it drops idle to normal

Glad the cab is fine

I think all should be ok

+1 That is true. It is normal for the car to idle high on startup, then drop to normal after a bit. Glad SHE is fine now. My car is also a she.

Ok since it was rushed I mainly sorted the areas where work needed to be done.

Image

Then Removed Filter and later on I removed the pipe between airbox and TB and gave that a real good cleaning. with some clean green and dryed it thoroughly with wifes hair dryer.

Image

Cleaned the throttle boddy which had some stuff in side. Used Carb Cleaner and microfibre cloth.

Image
Image

Got some electrical cleaner in aerosol for and gave the MAF sensor a clean after i removed it also wiped the hole where the sensor part itself goes.

Bottom of the sensor

Image
Top of the sensor which was later cleaned up too. Love that electrical cleaner smells awesome.
Image

Price and cost involved

Carb Cleaner - Purchased at Midas Primrose.
Electro cleaner - Purchased at Midas Primrose.
Clean Green - Found in cleaning stuff cupboard.
Micro Fibre cloth - Found in cleaning stuff cupboard still in packaging.

Total R129.00

Satisfaction priceless and motivated me to start work on my 2door project car which I left for a while due to head up backside

will post more pics once phone is charged

What errors did it show? Something about throttle limit reached or exceeded? I wouldn't worry about that, mine had it on the Velo with 298 for 65k and the same t/b is now in my Velo with a 300 cam, still working.
Current rides:

VW Golf - 83 GT 2.1 16V 2-door with throttles
VW Golf - 78 LS 2.0 8V 4-door (2.1 ABF with throttles in progress)
VW Golf - '08 Citi Storm - 1.4 for now

Um I can find out. wasnt about throttle limit exceeded though. He took it out twice and was giving an issue so not too sure but he is confident stating its throttle... Ill send more details this evening.

Make sure you've got some slack on your throttle cable to allow the idle motor to move the throttle plate freely.

Checked the cable and revs dropped to 1000rpm so looks good thanks for the advice :hurray:
