How much money do you have to spend?

Oh and 2.6i pistons won't fit unless you have a 2E (2.0l 8V) crank to go with them.

One more thing, a Golf 3 is about as fat as a whale and as fast as a snail. Swop it for a Citi Golf if economical speed is what you are after. GVM of a Golf 3 is 1180kg vs Citi's 850kg.

Look at it like this, there is a general rule of thumb for warming up engines, its takes roughly a R1000 to gain 1kW of power. So when you do the sums and think about your mods, your available funds will determine the gains you make.

Last thing, don't modify your daily. Unless you have two cars or a reliable lift to work, don't do it. It can take months sometimes to get things done, especially if you are trying to work within a tight budget.

Some ball park numbers to think about.....

This is to pay someone to do up the car with little to no DIY;

1.6l head work, cam and exhaust, R15000 to R18000, expected power figure 90fwkW

2.0l rebuild of 1.6l block on top of the above, around R25000.
Expected power 100 - 105 fwkW

2.0l swop with cam and exhaust, around R19000
Power around 105kW

1.8 20VT swop, FMIC, piping, exhaust, clutch upgrade and driveshaft upgrade, about R30000. Expect 200wkW with stock turbo. Turbo upgrade is additional R30000 easily, but 350kW is achievable.

Its a given that aftermarket engine electronics are part of the list.

All the same work can also be done to a Citi Golf with similar budgets, considering the weight difference the performance would be much better.

Food for thought

The thing is I love my Mk3 and I want it faster than MK7 GTI so I want to know if I can upgrade this 1.6 or buying an ABF and do upgrades. Help

Drop in a 1.8T 20V motor, glue on a bigger turbo, do standalone management, have it tuned, then go think about taking on Mk7 GTIs.

Or ABF turbo.
Or buy a faster car.

There will be no cheap or easy way to get that 1.6 motor anywhere near to doing what you want to do.

Modding a VR is also not cheap and the amount of money spent versus gains will make your bank manager take out a hit contract on you.

if you want something faster than a golf7 then buy a 7R.
To get a golf 3 there you will spend around R100k.Do you have R100k cash?.
Putting 2.6 pistons in will definitely not get you there.

Buy a 7R, Strip it down, modify the equally stripped Golf 3 to accept all the 7R parts. Build Mk3/mk7 hybrid.

Certainly would be unique, something few people have done before.

This is probably because the Golf 3 is not the obvious choice for a performance car. I'm not saying it's a bad car, to the contrary in fact, just that a G7 is a high standard to measure up to.

We are not saying don't do it, but rather be realistic about the vehicle and your goals.

Why do you think the was the VR6 not on my list?

1st: Don't build what you can buy.

2nd: The term money pit is very applicable to the VR motors. Performance parts are properly expensive, the money spent VS power gained ratio is more like R2000 : 1kW on these things.

Do some research on what a used VR costs, knowing it will absolutely need to be rebuilt, VS the 1.8T motor.

Then go to the top of the page to the search button and start looking at some of the builds on this forum with regards to 20vT builds and VR6 builds. Look at the power figures.

Then come back to us here.

The only thing going for a VR6 is the sound. Other than that it is actually a very bad motor in terms of performance

It will take a lot more than "some" mods for an A4 DTM to even get close to the performance of a Mk7 R.

No easy answer to your question really. There is Audi RS3 8V Sedan/Hatch if catching a MK7 is a priority but that thing is expensive. Golf have evolved so much from MK3 to MK7 and I guess to match that you will have to spend a fortune.

Get anything from MK4 GTi and that will keep you smiling coming from the 1.6i Mk3 I think. Take good care of it and it will return the favour. Hope that helps.

Sorry bud the forum is not a "magic 8 ball".

You will need to do some diagnostics. Check and report back

1. Engine turning
2. Camshaft turning
3. Distributor turning
4. Spark and spark plugs
5. Fuel pressure (attach a pressure gauge) 3.5bar
6. Injector pulse (use a screwdriver as a stethoscope)
7. Compression test ( pressure is less important as long as the cylinders are all nearly the same)

Dont forget the basics before starting, check fluids and check battery voltage. Low voltage can create lots of false symptoms.

Short version, as long as you have compression, fuel and spark the engine will work.

If one is missing then you know what to fix.

If this process seemed somewhat above your pay grade, call Rob at DubCorp. His number is here in advertising section and on Google. Problem solved.

map sensor is unlikely to cause it not to start. unplug it if you think that is the issue , it will run albeit badly when you unplug it.
