Silencer add on to straight pipe - 1.9 Tdi Jetta 5

Post by Mr.G24 »

Hi

currently i'm running a straight pipe on my stock jetta 5 1.9tdi, this was done with the idea of doing software, but that horrible whoo(almost like an owl sound) that comes out the exhaust every time I change gear or let the throttle go is driving me insane.

so I was thinking of putting back a silencer, either my stock middle silencer or doing a freeflow silencer in the middle, but I also want to ask which would be better, putting a silencer back on in the middle of the exhaust or at back?

I don't think putting back my stock silencers would be a good idea as they have about 200 000km lifespan on the car, so not sure how they look on the inside, so rather going for a new freeflow silencer.

stage 1+ software is still on the card for later this month, but i need to get that sound sorted now, some advise or tips will be appreciated.

thanks

Refit the stock back box, will get rid of the noise.

I never seen them fail

But with about 200 000km won't it have soot build up or he clocked up inside and restrict the car?

Not really bud, it would have some soot build up that u can't avoid, but I doubt it would be enough to clog up the entire box.

I have seen polos with 350k kms+ still hauling with stock exhausts

Another option is tuning first, open Vanes etc can change the way the turbo sounds

I also still have the stock centre silencer as well, should i not rather refit that,as the backbox will he much more work,as i have a double tailpiece on the car now that is single into double and my backbox is double outlet, will it be more silent if i fit the standard backbox or the standard centre silencer?

The back box is the game changer..

Straight flow boxes don't quiten the car as much as the rear chambered boxes.

the straight pipe needs a box in the middle to quieten the whistling sound, with the back box it will be significantly quieter, but the middle box is needed to stop the turbo from making that whining noise underneath you when you drive.

If you are missing the cats, it would be much louder and the silencer might make it quieter, but won't get rid of the sound if the cats are missing.

Mines whistles when its cold, my dad's car(Golf 1.9 tdi) started whistling extremely loudly when the turbo was on it's way out, so good idea to check that first, if the turbo itself under the hood is whistling loudly, it might be on it's last legs. I have been told that on some cars it whistles regardless of a new turbo or old, although both mines and my dad's are fairly quiet.

Hi Callum229

thanks for the feedback, damn I just don't hope that my turbo is on its way out. yes the cat has been cleaned out, but the hollow cat is still in the downpipe, so wanting to get that sorted, but just to get it softer I will have to get a silencer, maybe go for the backbox.

my car do not have the whistling sound, mine has a terrible whoo sound, almost like its gasping for air every time I change gears or let go of the throttle on mid range rpm.

I need to get that sorted and I think software alone wont do the job.

Do you mind making a video, put it on youtube as private, and putting the link down as a reply.

I find it strange that the car would make that sound, especially if it is straight piped, as I have been in a straight piped TDI, that has hollowed cat and straight piped from there on. and it doesn't make a whoo sound, just a TDI thump and induction noise, mind you it was tuned, it did however have a loud turbo whistle.

No check engine lights? could be stuck vanes.

Mines makes an induction sound under hard acceleration, like a whooshing, sucking noise, although it sounds nice.
