My brothers XPolo had a hardstart issue, was the crank sensor...... check via VCDS for faults in log as mentioned by Chuck

No error faults logged we have been trying for the past week. The wors part is. We have to leave the car over night to only get this problem in the mornings. The rest of the day its perfect.

air in the fuel system. most probly at the dieselfilter. so it doesnt seal perfectly and draws air into the fuel supply chain....it then has to purge the air out before it starts.

when you park at night , make a note of the size of the fuel bubble in the clear plastic fuel line ging to the injectors. in the morning check it again....if the bubble becomes bigger its sucking air

Check what the torsional values is on VCDS and let us know. As if the timing is way off, it will struggle to start.

Most of the time, the long cranking is due to the sensors on its way out, but they usually trigger a fault code.

Either then that, check the fuel system, check fuel pump pressure(the fuel pump from the tank) as I don't see the tandem pump leaking if it has been changed.

I know that there isn't any clear fuel lines, only the older engines had those, so maybe take out the line going to the tandem pump, connect a clear line to that, put a bucket and flow the fuel into that and check if the fuel pump is priming and that there is no air bubbles inside the line.

After a good 7 months.

Redid complete motor.

The only thing left to do is injectors.

After a long park. Overnight or while at work for the day. Have to hold on crank for awhile until she takes. Some mornings like today. She turns over on the first try.

Injector prices are suicidal.

If it's not the crank sensor, it could be dirty injectors.

Same happened to me a few years ago - I eventually had to replace my starter due to all the cranking. I took my car to Bosch and it turned out to be dirty injectors which they cleaned and after that - no issues again.

Faulty/incorrect or incorrectly fitted Injector seals

Also ha this problem about 7 year ago and its sort since then, Replace both sensors and needed to do some adjustment on the cam shaft pulley just to get the problem solved as i kept on getting a error of camshaft possession out of range and this was OEM sensor i bought. It starts on the crankshaft sensor and then runs on the cam shaft sensor.

Hope this helps you.
