diagnosing DMF on ahf vw mk4tdi

Post by Cass »

Hi all

I would appreciate some input in this.

My car = vw mk4 tdi. 2002 . model ahf. fsh with new turbo recently. engine starts first time , no excessive smoke , engine pulls healty , idles fine healty diesel tractor sound , however for the last couple of days I noticed a new noise.

first heard it on the highway , idling in traffic...i could hear the sound bouncing of the barrier...a light "clicking/rattling/popcorn"' sound.
again noticed the same , pulling up my driveway under load, and then idling in my garage.

its most noticable under light load in the low rpm range. its the same type of pinging/plinking sound i use to hear in my vw citi carb golfie ,when the ignition timing was a bit off and its engine was inder load.

my first impression was it might be a serpentine belt tensioner , however a DMF thats on its way might also fit the symptom.
anybody have some experience on this?

Thank you for you insight

Yes. 99.9% chance it is DMF.

Apparently they can manifest themselves in different ways. Mine first became noticeable when switching off the engine. On the very last stroke, as the engine "froze", there was a loud, single "clack" or double "claddack" from underneath the car. Then later, it gave similar clicks or clacks (very seldom, only sporadic), audible in the car while driving, when the engine was half-warm and under moderate load below 2000 rpm. Sometimes, there would also be a clack upon first ignition, the moment combustion took over from the starter, or from a roll-start.

But weirdly, mine never made a noise under idle.

Panic replaced mine last year (LUK kit from GW, very happy with it). All in, with a new rear main seal, it came to 9.5k, so I guess you'd be looking at around 10k.
