TDi oil cap allowing dirt into the engine

Post by PeterTech »

Hi guys.

I don't know if anyone has observed this but i have noticed that the oil cap on my Polo 1.6 tdi seems to allow a little dirt into the engine overtime. I have bought a new one and changed it about 7 months ago since the old one even allowed water into the engine when it rained.

Any advice on how to sort out this issue.

This cannot be good, seems like a design flaw. I don't know much about cars but having dirt in your engine will definitely stuff it up.

Replace the rubber seal on the oil cap. Vw sells them separately, and wipe the area clean each time before opening the cap.

There's always positive pressure in the crankcase, I don't see how it would suck in dirt it's most likely falling in when u are opening the cap.

I had an issue on a 1.9tdi where the oil cap kept on leaking oil, a double seal fixed it. Might not work on your oil cap/Tappet cover tho

Does cap open and close loosely?

When a car tailgates me, i slow down - then floor it and give them a cloud of diesel smoke to choke on :driving:

No, it is not loose It is almost new. I bought it 7 months ago to stop rain water from getting into the engine.

Another thing is if you look under the cap on the attached picture you will see dirt, how did that get in there?

When I service my TDI, I pull the "funnel" from the valve cover and clean it (and that whole area).

Buy a cover that goes over trailer electrical plugs. It fits almost perfectly over the cap. Stop sand from going into the funnel.
Drive the R21 with those uncovered sand trucks much?. there I days I want to kill them.
