Polo 9n3 1.9 tdi Sportline Oil recommendations

Hi Everyone :hi:

Apologies for this in advance as I know its been discussed a number of times already, but i still cannot come to a definitive answer on which oil to use and why

I know most people say use LM Top Tech 4100 5w40 but from what I've read on their site is that its Synthetic technology and not full synthetic, is it still okay to use it? as I've also read that these PD engines need full synthetic oils.

Shell Helix HX7 Professional AV 5W-30 - is also Synthetic technology and not full synthetic, and I literally cant find a place that actually sells this specific one that meets the 505.01, most of them that I find dont have the "AV" which is not the same.

Castrol edge 5w40 - According to the Castrol site it is Fully Synthetic but I dont know theres been so much of talk of Castrol causing sludge from numerous forums and people that I'm actually trying to stay away from Castrol.

TITAN GT1 SAE 5W-40 - it is 505.01 approved but not sure whether it is Full synthetic or Part, they say on the site XTL Technology. Still getting pricing on this though

Any comments and suggestions will be greatly appreciated :type:

Unfortunately the whole range of LM prices went up and they are selling for around R700 for 5L.

Try a midas, somebody told me it's like R650 or so.. Prices may differ from franchises..

Be sure to start a rides thread so we know how long it takes hx7 to kill a camshaft and lifters

I always used Shell Helix HX7 Professional AV 5W-30 in my 9n Polo Sportline and continue to use Shell in all my cars with the exception of my Golf.

Thank you for that, any idea which brand VW is currently using and if its all the VWs or just a specific branch with the special?

The normal HX7 is not an 505.01 approved VW oil (despite it saying it can be used in petrol & diesel vehicles on the bottle) , The HX7 AV is an approved 505.01.

Using a non- approved/incorrect spec oil will caused premature failure on the camshaft & lifters.

Thats what Ashveer meant.

Different branches uses different oil's but at that price, can only guess that they selling something like Petronas or along that lines.

All you need is a 505.01 spec oil, brand is a personal preference.

The premature failure does not happen suddenly , does take some time.

and the correct Idiom is "shaking in my boots" bru

according to the toptec 4100 bottle it is not fully synthetic, its semi syn

and the technical info sheet states it can be used in drain intervals up to 30K

and then it says in bold for use in only sulfur free diesel only!

so i am guessing the sulfur free and 30k drain interval go hand in hand, but stating only sulfur free can confuse people

i personally use caltex havoline ultras 5-40 fully synthetic it is 505 01 approved and can be got between 400-500 at midas, have used it almost a 100k kms now @ 15k drain using 50ppm only i have to state the higher your consumption the more you pollute you diesel with sulfur, higher consumption should see earlier drain intervals.

i haven't physically checked the lobes for wear but on vcds one can check the injector balance on all cylinders at idle on group 13 my numbers are all well below the recommended and are more or less identical, numbers all over the place or too high or low is an indication of cam lobe wear or unhealthy injectors, low cylinder compression etc. i just check the numbers once a year or so, there are alot of other variables so best would be a visible inspection also.

remember midas prices can be negotiated dont just pay the price on the shelf

Me too... GW Delarey's 10% discount for VW Club Members is so damn good... the savings pay for the club membership + VAT...

Thank you to everyone for the Responses thus far,

So currently I'm deciding between the below 3:

Motul X-clean 8100 5w40
Caltex havoline ultra S 5w40
Fuchs TITAN GT1 5W-40

All are 505.01 spec and reasonably priced, As much as I would like to use liqui moly 4100 top tec at nothing less than R720 a time and me wanting to service every 10k km which I do in 2 months it is not feasible
