Post by Tsalie-TDI »

Hi guys

I’m looking at getting caddy for the family 2017 with 43k on the clock there are not many of them on the internet and really think it’s a good buy what are the pros and cons with these vehicles?

It’s a manual

Be sure you know the service history and if possible how it was driven by the previous owner/owners.

I have a Maxi Crew Bus 2.0TDI manual and it is an amazing vehicle.
Only issue I had so far was an abused clutch that died as the previous drivers clearly drove like twatwaffles. It was an ex-VW service vehicle and had 8 different drivers.

Take it for a test drive and any shuddering from the clutch while accelerating on the highway in 4th or 5th from any speed or any clutch slipping in the same conditions means bad news.

Other than that it has given no hassles at all in the year I have had it.

As per Jetta2's comments, I can add the following:

Pro's:
Extremely versatile and spacious vehicle. We tow with ours, its a moms taxi, a bakkie, family car
Light on fuel. Heavy town only driving sees about 8,5 l/100km, whilst open road drops to between 5,8 and 6,4 l/100km
Maintenance is very reasonable. Big ticket items were a cambelt change (105 000km) and a clutch replacement (162 000km). Services at the agents range from R1 800 for an interval service (lube service 15k, 45k, 75k, etc) and about R3 500 (30k, 60k, 90k, etc). As a bonus, you can find lots of parts at Goldwagen.

Cons:
It has a leaf sprung rear axle. Driving empty can be choppy over speed bumps in particular, but it settles down with a bit of weight in the back.
Ours has a annoying drone / resonance from the exhaust at around 2 800 r/min, which equates to around 130km/h clock speed in 5th gear or 110 km/h clock speed whilst towing a caravan in 4th gear. We have just learnt to live with it or adjust speed accordingly.
Try to get one with dark upholstery. Ours is one with the light grey interior and it shows up dirt and stains and requires a valet to get right again.

For piece of mind I would suggest that you get someone to run a VCDS scan for you if you aren't buying from a VW/Mastercars dealer.

We have had our Caddy for nearly 12 years since new and I would not hesitate recommending one.
