1.9 polo tdi 96kw idling issues

Post by brendonr »

hi all

so on idle the cars fine but for a few seconds the car hunts and then its normal again. Drives perfectly even revs clean and smooth but just when idling you can hear the hunting...its not for long periods jst a few seconds then normal again.

where to start????? cars jst been serviced...new oil...new filters... but havent done proper diagnostics. last diagnostics done at 135k service and now car is doing 160k but service up to date and oil used is 505.01 (only)

i have tried injector cleaner but no change

please help!!!!!

My advice would be to get the car logged with vcds...but if your fingers are itching to impatiently do something...you could start by cleaning the maf sensor...best of luck mate!

By hunting I take it that u don't mean sort of a misfire..

Iv seen quite a few were the idle rises up to 1000 and sometimes drops back down, it's caused by the alternator or alternator wiring. When things get faulty it senses that there's more load and it starts to charge extra which causes the idle to rise.
If u want to do some looking, then check at the plug behind the alternator and trace the wire all the way to the starter area, it almost always breaks off at the alternator or the wire gets stripped at the plug that's below the starter

If it's a sort of a misfire hunt then u probably got an injector problem

hi ashveer03...thanks for the info...its sounds like a misfire cos when i take off in 1st gear,i can actually feel the car wants to jerk but from 2 thru to 6 no problem...its only at idle the rev drops for the second or 2 and is stable at 903rpm...maybe injector problem!!!

any other advice????

Difficult to tell without actually seeing it in person or after some checks.

U will most likely end up replacing 1 Injector or so depending on the outcome of the tests done.

Well had a look at values on group 013 on idle...as follows..
Inj 1 = -0.39
Inj 2 = 0.07
Inj 3 = 0.04
Inj 4 = 0.07

I can't send a screenshot of vcds...

So I'm guessin inj1 is d issue ryt? The values fluctuate but this is more or less wat d values r on group 013...normal operating temp...

is this still happing?
if you are having ruff idle! and missing when a bit of load! and time to time vehicle shuts down!! with white/blue smoke!!

my solution is to removing head cover (tappet cover) check to see if all bolts of injector ar e tight that holds injector in the head (not the rocker). if one or more bolts is not tight you will have a misfire. reason why!! if you look just at a PD 1.9 tdi you will find a brass washer near the tip of injector and this has too seal up against the head before combustion chamber. this stops the combustion from interring up into the diesel. and if this is happing carbon will block the fuel before entering the injector causing misfire.
replace all seals like I did and you will have probably got rid of you misfire as I did. my problem was a stripped threads of the bolt that held the injector in. I bought seal kit (Bosch diesel brand)
I was quoted R60 000,00 for injectors and fuel pump. I could not afford this.
my vehicle is running like a new one now. I hope my story would help you. that's why I did this repair myself.

Please send any questions.
good luck

those injector reading are fine!
if you have no error code and the reading are fluctuating and below 2.99 its ok
problem could be elsewhere like the guys are saying, dont go remove injectors on you own, get someone knowledgeable on the PD engine

If you are still having issues my mate Paul has VCDS and is a top Mack.
