Jetta 5 2.0 Tdi (BKD) - High ideling and other problems

Post by Goosem@n »

The Jetta developed the following list of problems. Mileage - 126 000 km

I have had it scanned and no errors are reported.

1. When started it idles at 750 rpm as per normal. Once driven the idle settles just below 1000 rpm.
2. On occasion, it will crank over for about 5 seconds before it starts. Usually, it starts once the key is turned.
3. When it battles to start, the windows do not work on auto and the button needs to be held.
4. When it battles to start, the cruise control does not work.

Battery voltage 12.6 V and 13.9 V at idle.

I'm looking at purchasing VCDS so that I can do my own diags. I am an electrical engineer (electronics) and mechanically skilled. So I would be comfortable doing some basic fault finding without fancy diagnostic tools. I assume VCDS will assist with most diagnostics.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Morning

When Last was the cambelt done?
Can be timing on the Cams being out. Easy to adjust
Sounds like when it struggling to start that it draws to much power and the Auto windows looses memory?
Can be the battery that is starting to go Bad as well?
That's awesome low millage for the year model. Lovely cars.

I see youre also a big vw Diesel guy.

I will send you a pm on vcds suggestions.

Cheers

Yup sounds like a bad battery. Check the voltage while it's cranking..

So we got in the Jetta yesterday morning, it started, drove some 25 km mostly highway. Stopped for about 15 minutes. Got in to go again, as yes, dead battery. Jumpstarted the Jetta and went to replace the battery. I did replace the battery with one that has a higher CCA rating. So far it seems that all the faults and problems are gone and my wife is very happy that her baby is running again.
