"new" oil on the market any good?

Post by pikavaai »

Hi Guys,

saw this dieselube 530...then i remembered i'm up for an oil change soon... is it a good oil for my purpose? i guess good for summer, but not great for winter? I really dont know..unless the picture of the truck is a dead giveaway?

Golf 4 1.9 TDi, 2002 model, +-235000km

I cant attach pictures.. so its a purple 5L can with following wording "Petronas Engen Dieselube 530 Monograde Engine Oil, prolongs engine life for older vehicles, heavy duty, thicker oil" and "monograde 30, API CF/SF "

thanks a million!

Does this "new"oil meet the VW spec for your engine? If so, will be fine. If not, look for oil that does meet the spec for your engine. Win.

I doubt that any monograde oil would really be suitable. That stuff would be quite thick on a cold winter morning, but quite thin when chasing along the highway. I wouldn't even consider buying it.

But the most important thing is what Howie wrote: the VW spec for the engine. The Mk4 TDI needs a 505.00 oil. (505.01 is also fine, but actually overkill for this engine.) I use Shell Ultra 5W-40, which complies with VW 505.00, and Goldwagen sells for about R470 for 5L (IIRC). As full-synthetics go, that's not a bad price.

Rather stick to the correct specification if it doesn't say VW 505.00 spec then its not the oil for you,

There are lots of reputable brands out there.
Shell Helix HX8 Ultra
Castrol Magnatec Professional
ELF Evolution 900 FT
Total 9000 Quartz
Sasol 5W40 M
...

Just shop around for good price, don't cheap out on the oil you use  .

Petronas is a good quality oil.

Just get the right oil for your car, like Petronas Syntium 3000 5W40 or the Selenia range. Both are 505.00 spec oils.

I think there's probably counterfeit Petronas oil going around recently. I have seen 5w30 505.01 spec going for like R300 at local spare shops. The labels on the containers look sketchy too

For some reason I don't trust engen oil the same way I would trust shell. Lol

It's all preference , some won't touch Shell, they all within reason will service you well in normal use and service intervals , the additives make the difference, less noise, less break down , dirt in system and easy start up.

Just got the A3 serviced today , even though I do Motul, the Castrol from dealer was cheaper and just got the filters (VW by hengst)...also the Motul to spec was not with me.

hey all, thanks for the wealth of info, it's always nice to get more than you bargained for.

I have another one though, since we are on this slippery subject...

I have about 4liter of Castrol Magnatec 10w-40 505.0 part synthetic oil in my garage, my engine of course needs about 4.5l. Based on
what I've read everywhere I'll probably get a can of Shell Helix HX7 5w-30 505.01.

So now the question, can I use the Castrol oil for the engine rinse? 500ml down the oil fill hole, 500ml into the oil filter cylinder?

thanks a lot!

Have been using the Engen range for many years and can't complain. Even use it in my motorcycle.
In the motorcycle (wet clutch and gearbox sharing oil with engine) I picked up that Shell helix struggles to cope with the shearing stress and heat.
The Engen handles the stress a little better and for more km.
15w 40 in all my vehicles.
5w 40 also very good results.
For your car I must agree with the other guys. check that the 505 code is correct for your specific engine.

Your car does not require 505.01

Normal HX7 will probably do.

Cannot answer the rinse question, I always just drain complete and refil.

Out of interest, how much did you pay (I think for 4L?)

The HX7-AV is a bit of a mystery to me. I keep wondering why Shell would additise a semi-synthetic oil all the way to 505.01, but a fully synthetic, like the Ultra 5W-40, only to 505.00.

R104/l for 5 l , engine takes 4,5. I have non-PD, so 505.01 will be fine. I believe its fully synthetic, cant be mixed mineral?!!?!

Anyone on the rinse question? A cup of diesel ? sh** i dont know....

thank you!

Not sure why you want to rinse anything but sure can't think it will do harm. it will be better than diesel.

Ive read a post that some of the residual old oil comes out when you throw in a rinsing oil.

My initial plan was to clean the sump and strainer/suction pipe - never been looked at in 19 years.. but i'm not going to do that anymore.

Rinsing will probably help if u just fixed an oil-water mixing issue, other than that it's just oil being wasted IMHO.. If u stick to proper service schedules with decent oil then there shouldn't be any need for it..

Either way, if u still want to do it, then the castrol will definitely be better than using diesel.

19 years is a long time, u rather drop the sump and check the insides. Cleaning the pickup will be more beneficial than rinsing.
