AHF glow plug loom - replace or repair?

Post by VAG Fan »

I tried to remove the wiring loom from my AHF's glow plugs, in order to measure whether they get current, and also to measure their resistance. But the loom has become completely brittle. The rubber/plastic casing has cracked into umpteen cylindrical pieces that just break off as you touch it.

Is this part available as a spare? How difficult is it to remove from the engine harness and fit a new one?

Or has anyone tried breaking off the casing and re-covering the loom with fabric tape?

OK, found some info and videos re. the replacement. Original is removed partially by snipping the connectors on either end but leaving the wires in place (as they are part of the engine loom). New part is fed into some flexible conduit and this is then routed along the same path as the original.

Only question is whether the loom is available and what it costs...

On my previous MK4 i had the same degrading issue, although mine still worked perfectly, easiest way is to pull one glow plug, turn ignition on and see if it glows red, do that to all 4 and you'll see if they're atleast working. IIRC i either contacted agents or goldwagen Deleray for the replacement and it was +-R700 for a new loom. not sure exactly what was included or where it spliced into etc.

Thanks, Dieter.

Yes, taking them out for testing would be first prize. Did you find the plugs reasonably easy to remove? Apparently it can be quite an issue removing them, and then getting them to seal properly again.

Not at all difficult. I had to buy a deep socket 10mm I think it was. Or 11 I can’t remember honestly. When tightening it you just need a “nip”, no need to over tighten. If you can find it, there’s bound to be a torque spec somewhere on the interwebs.
