Water leak

Post by Tswerie »

Good day All.
Late in January we had a couple of hot days in Cape Town, above 35 degrees Celsius. During this time my vehicle used allot of water, between 2-5L per day. I drive about 15 kms per day. Looking from under the car, I could see the water leaking from the right side of the engine. Its been a week since temperature returned to the 30's and there is no leak and no water usage. Any idea what the cause of the leak was? I drive a 2010, 1.6TDI polo hatch, 292 000 kms.

Thanks Panic.
Any idea how much it will cost to replace the water pump?

absolute piece of string question. totally depends on what you pay for parts and what the labour rate is of who does the work, do you change the cambelt at the same time etc.etc. Anything from R2k to R6k.

Impressive kilos on that motor.
Any major issues with the car?

Not really.
+- 200 000 KM replaced clutch,
+- 250 000 KM removed EGR and DPF,
and now the water leak that has since stopped.
My fuel consumption before 250K per tank was 5.5l/100km, now its 5.7l/100km.
Since removal of DPF and EGR my oil consumption is 2 pints between service.
Starting is also not as quick as before 250KM.

I have the car since new,
if I can buy another vehicle it will be another Polo TDI.

The cause was the oil filter holder. The vehicle also used oil, about 3L over 7 000 km. The vehicle also emitted grey smoke through the exhaust. I take it the grey smoke was the water and the oil going through the engine. I've done about 3000 kms since replacing the oil filter holder and not used oil or water.

Are you referring to the oil cooler? Integrated into (or attached to) the oil filter flange and has water pipes running into it.
