Cracked Polo 1.6 TDI cylinder head

Post by GJulius »

Just a question for the Diesel Machanics. Can a cylinder head cracked within 3 weeks of having a car. This is now 3 weeks since buying the car ir is it actually impossible unless you really abused the car within those 3 weeks. I bought a tdi and experienced heave coolant loss within 3 weeks. Took the car to VW only to be told that the cylinderhead is crack and the dealership tells me that i drove the car warm which caused it to break?!

Where did you buy it from?

Hard to say could have been a hairline crack and then started to get progressively worse after you got it...

New, second hand? If from a recognized dealer they have to sort it out.
But yes without knowing the situation and more about it it is hard to comment.
If it has an egr cooler that is also where the water could be going.

I think that your issue is an internally leaky waterpump... The water pumps on these 1.6tdi motors are weak, if you revv them to 5000rpm a couple times you are almost certain to damage the water pump... Does anybody know of an upgraded steel blade water pump??

If second hand buy, one possibility can be the following.
The dealer drove car to a car cleaning company who could have washed the engine bay with power washer while the engine was still hot.
I know of couple of places that take cars to be sold to these kind of places that will clean a car heavily. Don't like it as it can hide how the car was looked after by previous owner.

Who said regularly revving to 5000rpm gentlemen?

Anyway you will be surprised how many people are stupid enough to drive their diesel cars to redline thinking its fine

OP did you have the auxiliary (internal) & external water pump checked?

If you rev a diesel to over 5000 rpm daily you bought the wrong car. Should have gotten a petrol.
