mk4 Turbo refurbish time

Post by Cass »

Hi Friends .

Looking for some information.

My mk4 now has 310 000 , and im looking at having the turbo looked at/ refurbished/replaced.

What are my options here?

1. Remove , decarbon , and re core?
2. replace with 96kw turbo from polo (goldwagen/vw dealership)
3. look for factory stock turbo(vw dealirship).

Im not looking to make mad power , just a reliable daily.
What would be my best route here , and at what price?

1. Remove , decarbon , and re core?
Well it depends what core u want to use, dont waste ur time with chinese cores. And even with a new branded core, its always a good idea to get it balanced again..

2. replace with 96kw turbo from polo (goldwagen/vw dealership)
If u have a kp39 (74kw) on ur car at the moment, fitting a bv39 (96kw) turbo will cost quite abit. Need a remap and boost pipe adjustment. +- 12k with a brand new original turbo. U might even need a new oil feed or drain line.

If u not in for the performance then i agree with billionairebum, send the turbo to gaby at fastec for a recon. I highly doubt u get any better than Fastec.

Cass,

Did the original turbo last all the way to 310.000 km? That's very impressive in my books. Are you getting overboost and/or limp mode because of a sticky VNT mechanism?

I'm asking because I also need to exchange/overhaul my AHF's turbo. It's the original one, but was overhauled at 120k, and has now run another 120k. I have a new one (bought from Goldwagen when they had a special in March), but haven't fitted it yet. I'm planning on fitting the new one, then deciding what to do with the old one. Please keep this thread updated!

Hi Friends

Sorry for the late reply. yes , my car has the original turbo still fitted, although i do not suffer from limp mode , i do suffer some turbo boost lag. im sure the vnt does not close all the way(sticky) , and the intake is probly clogged aswell. the car is ahf (81 kw) , i think the polo unit is direct swap.

Vagvan , what did you pay for the turbo?

Hi Cass,

To my knowledge, the polo unit is a direct swap, provided you fit a new boost pipe on the outlet (intercooler) side. The original AHF turbo has old-style boost pipe fittings (with a normal hose clamp), while the Polo unit, I think, has the "quick-fit" connector (not sure what they are called). The one that just pushes in, with an O-ring and a spring clip to hold it in place.

I bought the AHF turbo (made by Garrett, UK) in March. Can't remember the exact price, but give or take a few 100, it was marked down from about R10.5k to about R7.5k, so I jumped at the opportunity.

I do not think that it is a direct swop.

so I got a quote from local guys here in centurion.

Refurbished turbo, including labour fitment etc , incl flushing of hoses and intercooler for 7k ex vat.

Is that a reasonable rate , seeing that GW turbos go for about 10k??

Theres no need to flush the piping and cooler if the turbo didnt explode..
The pipes can be wiped clean, the cooler can be flushed if u like.

I still suggest u send the turbo to fastec. They use original stuff, and the turbos are well balanced and set.

I would be wary of others just changing out the chra with a chinese 1 - thats not a good idea

Thanks all for your input. I apologise it has been awhile since i last updated.

So i used some lique Moly intake cleaner , sprayed to the manifold while the car is running to try and chemically clean the egr and intake a bit to see if it will aid in getting rid of some of the boost lag. The car run like normal for a month , but the lag now has returned. So I accept that the vnt is a bit clogged up or sticky atleast.

Has anybody dealt with a company called " Turbo Works" in hennopspark in centurion?

Their customer response and feedback was good and I cant find any immediate bad reviews for them online, and i am willing to give them a shot?

I wonder what "refurbishment" at R7k actually entails... If it were me, I'd enquire about the work they actually do, which parts they use, etc. [Edit: including warranty terms.]

Also keep in mind, Panic Mechanic (Stephan) is just a 20-30 minutes drive from Pta East, out on Delmas Rd., into Benoni outskirts. You could always take your AHF there for a proper diagnosis and some advice.

again. Check the turbo direct facebook page. They were selling them for under R4K . Why would you do a recon if you can buy a new one. worth a look at the part numbers and see if it is one of the ones they have on special.
