Alternator service required mk4 1.9.tdi Jetta advice!!

Post by whitey »

Hi guys new to tdi's.
I need advice regarding the alternator service message on the dash. Now the car does not start in the mornings. Does this mean that the battery is dead or the alternator needs a refurb?

Please help
Cheers

Most likely that alt is not charging battery, hence the no start. Not sure if they are serviceable, maybe brushes?

Take and post a pic up.
Maybe the regulator needs to be replaced.

For a genuine one anything between R300-450.

I am guessing your car has a Boasch alternator, but I am not sure if it's a 90/12 amp unit.

If you have a multimeter, while the car is idling test charging.
If not then pop past midas/ Autozone or a battery center shop for a free testing in your battery and alternator.

I speak under correction, but I seem to remember having read that the Mk4 doesn't have a normal stand-alone regulator in the alternator. Rather, the ECU monitors and regulates the voltage?

Good to know. (Because mine is becoming ever slower to react to voltage spikes, e.g. indicator or switching headlights on or off.)

Thanks!

Hi Guys, the battery was the cause of all the trouble. It wouldn't hold the charge overnight. Replaced with a new one. All ok.
Thanks for the advice
