Polo TDI straight pipe

Post by Johann van Dyk »

Hi Guys

I have a 2004 Polo TDI Sportline (96kw-310nm) with 70 000 kms on the clock. I want to put a straight pipe on the car.

Is it a bad idee?
Will it have an effect on the fuel consumption?
Will it do and have any effect on the turbo and do a score extra kw and nm on the car?

U have really low mileage there..

As far as i know from my experience with my car, putting on a straight pipe just changes the sound and nothing else. However, decatting the car gives better economy and a little power gain.

I bought the car from an old lady. it has just been standing in her garage. I think a found a little gem!

A few of my friends have straight pipes on there TDIs and it sound great.
Is it worth the money tho?
Will it mess up the turbo?

Well to me (i love the sound) its worth the money.. u can just cut off the silencer and catalytic converter and weld on a piece of pipe or u can do a complete exhaust system (i have a 63mm downpipe and 63mm straight pipe). Depends on ur pockets and, for a stock turbo a huge exhaust is not needed..

In my opinion, i feel its good for the turbo because it will have less restriction, that means less strain on the turbo..

And since ur car has that low mileage, i suggest u maintain her well with the correct oil and fuel and it should last u forever

Pretty Simple. If you are under 30 years of age do it.
If older it is going to start annoying you pretty soon.

I'm under 30 and it annoys me some days.
Guess that's why my one fried calls me oupa.

Please don't molest it. You got a hen's tooth there.

Bunch of old ballies.. lol! I would recommend a new exhaust (cheaper option is a Mild Steel exhaust and downpipe, will set you back around 5k, keeps your stock exhaust unmolested). I did it on my Jetta, sounds really good methinks. There is no drone (on my car, on my friends Golf 4 TDI or another 1.9TDI I drove with straight pipe). Choice is yours.

My recommendation would be to decat the car and replace the stock backbox with a cowley (or any other brand) freeflow box. Still gives the car a nice grunt and removes the drone noise. I had a cowley freeflow box where my cat used to be and this was perfect for myself, friend of mine has the box at the back and as mentioned above, it still give a nice grunt.

Stock exhaust with everything cut out (straight pipe) will end up looking like this:

5k for mild steel is way too expensive. A stainless steel downpipe and exhaust no silencers will cost around 3500 at max

Straight pipe will sound good.
Plus one on what others said, please take care of the car and don't molest it.

You have one nice gem there.

Hi guys, thank you very much for the help and advice.

I did a decat on the car and cut of the back box by replacing it with a 63mm stainless steel straight pipe.
I went to powerflow who asked R800 to do so, I am happy with it, but I have to get used to the sound of the turbo. . It really sounds great, a bit loud in the neighborhood tho.

No, u wont need a remap if u decat.

I suggest remove the cat first, if u want more turbo noises then remove the back box, dont do it the other way around. The car doesnt need the cat, it runs better without it.

I removed the cat on a 1,2 Bluemotion because I was tired of going to VW due to the DPF clogging ,then they do a regen excersice and you pay again to clear the fault codes on the dash and If I did'nt do that then the car used to go into limp mode.

Now after decat the fault codes comes back on after a month.....and now I get some mechanic to clear with his laptop software
Looks like the sensor on the cat thinks otherwise - what to do hear ?
Who can help with this? any advise to go to a reputable tuner and mabe get a map too?

Coming back to this, I have Done a stage 1 on my 1.2 tdi bluemotion, removed the cat, blanked of the EGR and removed dpf and deleted it out the software, fitted a powerflow backbox, i can hear the sound but its not as loud.... thinking about just removing the powerflow back box and doing a straight pipe should not cost alot.

JakesNell wrote: Sat Oct 02, 2021 12:49 pm I did a straight pipe on my 1.2 TDI Bluemotion and sounds nice to me, at just above 3500 slowly accelerating you get a real loud sound and then clean. Also lifting of the throttle after you pull you hear the blowoff into the intake I think as one loud swoosh. Car pulls much beter and gets up and going quicker than before. Lighter on diesel too but my foot is heavier after the straight pipe XD.
Do you have software aswell?
