Polo 1.4 TDI PD White Smoke

Post by Henry@AMF »

Hi All,

I am new to forum. I am hoping I could get some help with my car and I will list what I have done.
(Cambelt broke)

1. Replaced valves, valve guides, valve stem seals and lifters
2. New head gasket from GW
3. Replaced head bolts and torqued to spec
4. Set timing and cam timing

What I have not done.

1. Set cam timing on VCDS
2. Not sure if workshop replaced seals on injectors and if they were removed but I'm guessing they where.

What I'm experiencing now.

1. Exhaust smokes white smoke when revving or accelerating.
2. I looked in water reservoir and there was really thin layer of oil/ dirt almost like exhaust gasses( could be that I did not flush system properly as oil cap is normal with no white colour )

What could be the problem - Head gasket leaking, Diesel injector settings wrong, diesel leaking past seals?

If any one can give some advice, I would really appreciate it

No to both questions. How would I check the oil cooler?
Bad oil cooler would only be the solution for the thin layer of oil in water, or will it be for the white smoke aswell?

You can pressure test it yourself . Remove the unit then block off one end with a hose and plug it . Put another piece of hose on the coolant end ,depending on what air source youll be using youll have to get creative with plumbing it to pump air into the unit . dump it in a bucket of water and pump in air ,if you have a compressor set it on 6/8 psi if not use a bicycle pump , if you see bubbles youll know its cracked meaning the oil is mixing with the water .

Also check for boost leaks ..

So I have an update.

I saw some bubbles in water and they increase when I rev the car a little higher.
It's safe to say head is not on properly as it's leaking exhaust gas into water and water into one of my cylinders.
Time to strip again.

Any advise from here on? Head is probably not straight...It did not overheat but I have no other reason why head gasket is leaking

White smoke that smells strongly of diesel means injectors that are not working properly.

Or compression in one or more cylinders has dropped and isn't burning the injected diesel as it should.

I'm tired of scratching now. Taking it to Rodac as I don't have the time to fix it.

As for what it could be I'm hoping it's not head or head gasket as I just did it.

But I will wait and hear what Rodac says.

Hi all. I have an update and questions.

I took out my injectors rather before taking car in. Seals are gone and want to know if the copper seal on tip of injector must be moving around or tight on injector?

Hi

I have a 1.9tdi polo with similar problem. The car got water in diesel tank and now has white smoke from start to stop, hot or cold.

Turbo was repaired and timing was checked. The engine has a new head gasket and no oil in water. There is diesel in the oil but with no sign of the injector o-rings leaking. Where can I send the injectors in to around the east rand to test and repair?

Sorry for hijacking the thread.

I'm not aware of anybody rebuilding PD injectors.
But if anybody can do it , it will be nortern diesel in pretoria.
Google the number, phone them and ask.

No problem. We have to discuss these problems anywhere we can as help could be all over.

I have no idea what is going on with my car. I've done timing 10 times already and still same issue.

No oil in water or water in oil. New head gasket and head was done with new valves, sleeves, seals and lifters.

My guess would be injectors with my car or their seals.

I will know by Monday as car only went in yesterday.

How did you set the timing? With VCDS? Cause that's the only way

lol. Nope. That's why I'm taking it in. I played around trying to get it close to the best I could on the cam setting.

So still smoking but I don't believe the smoke is because of the timing not set on vcds.

Hi guys.

So car is finally fixed. I had everything correct. Injector seals were gone. So Rodac replaced them and white smoke is gone!

I still have to burn out the oil that's caught up in my exhaust by taking a long trip but I'm happy.

Thanks for all the help.

Hi guys

Didn't want to start a new thread for the same topic.

Does anyone know where I can find the pd injector install kit(the 2 big o-rings,small o-ring and copper washer), goldwagen by east rand mall is out of stock and there suppliers is also out?

Second question if you install the injectors how do you set the "rockers" for these injectors?

Thanks in advance.

Hey. I know VW has the seals. Rodac replaced mine with Bosch seals but I don't know if they would sell to you. You can give them a try.

For the settings. Try this page.

I did not use that gage. Just looked at when the rocker was at its highest point on lobe before I tightened it.

All the way till you feel resistance then 180 degrees back is perfect.
