Help Please - Steering,ABS and handbrake light and warning l
Hi All
I need some help,
My polo tdi 1.9L 9N 2008 has an issue,
The problem first started a week or so ago where all the above warnings came on while driving at night,
This resulted in a tight steering and speedo at 0KM/H.
Switched the car off and started it up and it was fine,
second time at night at the similar area of my trip home it did the same thing,
So i switched it off and started it up, then it was fine,
I didn't use my car yesterday(Sunday) and then used it today,
just started my trip with the lights on and the same as above all lights came on, so i did the normal and all but the management light stayed on.
Drove it to work, but i still have the management light on,
Any idea why?
i do know i change wheel bearings a few weeks ago, could this be a part issue with the abs?
i have read posts that it could be the battery or fuse?
Or does the brake fluid and power steering fluid share the same fluid?
I need some help,

Check your battery's earth strap it might be loose and not making good contact.

Re: Help Please - Steering,ABS and handbrake light and warni
Thats the wheel bearing IMO.
AFAIK the battery or earth strap will not make the speedo and trip display read faulty.
Since it costs nothing to have the earth strap and battery tested start there,
but I doubt it will be that.
If you still don't come right get the car logged and see which ABS wheel
sensor is showing a fault. Remove that wheel and ABS sensor (easy... just 1 allen)
clean up any debris and grease and refit.
If all the above fails replace wheel bearing.
It is not uncommon for a brand new wheel bearing to give this issue.
I have had wheel bearings done on my Polo 1.9TDi, after two months
I had the same issue. Only swapping out the wheel bearing helped.

Re: Help Please - Steering,ABS and handbrake light and warni
Ok so things i have done so far :
1.Push or played around with the ECU plug = No change
2.I Got a BT OBD2 reader and laptop = P0600 Serial Communication Link Malfunction.
That above is the only issue/Code that the ecu is showing.
Looking at this issue shows that all the above cant be broken at once, so i do think an error or weak signal in the car, this could be caused by the weak battery volts, fuse.
I cleared the fault and will check when it comes up again,
But its not the wheel bearing,
my ecu does not have a shock cover on it to keep it in place, so im worried that it could move and cause a weak signal issue.

I will be checking the connection later as i dont have tools right now.
But i do have the car for a year, so i assume the battery is old, i knew that it would need to be changed,
but i have not had any other signs the battery had been going,

Re: Help Please - Steering,ABS and handbrake light and warni
hey bud.
The Exact same thing happen to me a few months ago.
Turned out to be the speed sensor which was picking up the error due to a stuffed wheel bearing + bearing housing.
We replaced the wheel bearing and the housing and all was sorted

Re: Help Please - Steering,ABS and handbrake light and warni
This was the problem I had, was caused by the earth cable.
http://vwclub.co.za/forum/viewtopic.php?f=94&t=157575
Solution was to remove it, sanded both terminals and put it back. 1.5 years later not a single problem yet.

Re: Help Please - Steering,ABS and handbrake light and warni
You say you changed bearings not not ago, which leads me to believe the housing was probably stuffed too which has now damaged the new bearing.
Unfortunately i had the same Sh!t, replaced bearing and all was cool for a week then probablem came back and had to replace housing and the bearing again, and i haven't had any sh!t for the passed 6 months now

i did change my rear wheel bearing a month ago. Im sure it picks up thw front wheel bearing right?Caddyon wrote:hey bud.

Ok before the first issue i did hit a pot hole very hard and 10 min later the warnings came on.so could be the front wheel bearing or housing caused the issue.

lol yes i read this post, so im going to start with the battery/earthing then move to the wheel bearing,Chuck_Norris wrote:This was the problem I had, was caused by the earth cable.

Crap , i assume this is for the front bearings but???Caddyon wrote:You say you changed bearings not not ago, which leads me to believe the housing was probably stuffed too which has now damaged the new bearing.

i do think the pot hole caused an issue with the front wheel bearings-
I have not lost any power in the car , the speedo went to zero everytime the warnings come on with a tight steering.
No other issue

Re: Help Please - Steering,ABS and handbrake light and warni
Mostly what we found if it is a bearing the abs light will come on and a spped sensor error is logged.
it wont affect cluster resting or steering going hard. That points to power supplys.
Start by checking battery , then you remove all big fuses on battery clean and refit them.remove the small earth starps on the left chasis leg shock post behind the airbox and clean them. That should put a end to the cluster and steering problem and the abs error.
then rescan and check for wheel speed errors.

Wheel speed sensor definately can affect the cluster resting, but I think you right aboutMostly what we found if it is a bearing the abs light will come on and a spped sensor error is logged.

the steering going hard.
When my wheel bearing was as an issue, the log showed a wheel speed sensor error and the cluster
went crazy, fuel light came on when there was enough fuel in the tank, and speedo was stuck
at 0 km/h.
I agree with starting with the battery, fuses and earth strap cos they are easy fixes.
I have a spare FL speed sensor if you ever need to swop it out and test the speed sensor.

Re: Help Please - Steering,ABS and handbrake light and warni
Quick update
1.I have driven the car yesterday home with lights on , no issues.
-Got home checked the fuse box on the battery , looks clean and fine,
-Checked the first strap from battery to body, looks fine, but can tell much until i remove it.
-I'm going to do a battery test at lunch and then will feed back.

Update -
Did a battery test, seems to be fine, this could result in a good alternator as well,
But will double check that.

I've seen a couple of cases where a cracked (not blown) fuse on top of the battery caused warning lights and heavy steering in 9N3 Polo's.
Current rides:

VW Golf - 78 LS 2.0 8V 4-door (2.1 ABF with throttles in progress)
