polo 1.9 tdi decat issue

Post by Scotty_88 »

Hi guys,

So took my car in to have the cat removed on my 1.9 tdi sportline, off the ramp the car did not start with with ease, drove back home and the car battled to start again.after i had it done it there was a strange noise coming from the turbo under boost and the car just felt flatter than usual, so i went back and the guy said there was a leak where they fitted the straight pipe so he fixed it and it seemed better but now i think its still pretty flat all round. what could be the problem?its really bugging me and not sure what to do now. Thanks in advance

+1

I have never heard of any issues after removing the 'cat' on these cars (Polo 1.9tdi 2002 - +-2008). Remember there is no sensor to confuse the system. It will just prevent heat build-up behind the turbo. There is definitely something else wrong.

No, nothing to do with that either. A 1m pipe exiting from the turbo is fine on these cars. No need for back pressure.

What else did they touch? How did they cut the pipe off and then re-join it, eg did they use an electric welder that could have messed with your battery?

well I got the Cat back on the power is better, although i have a problem starting my car occasionally, it takes about 5 seconds for the engine to turn on, im going to have to take the car in and get it checked out. They cut the cat out with a mig i think and then fitted a straight pipe, there was another tdi also getting de-cat and his was fine

We looked for leaks and nothing i could see. I called trevor from dimsport this morning about the issue and he said possibly my turbo is going, just dont understand why it would occur after a decat??anyway trevor said to do a diagnostic on the car, anyone know a reputable place in durban?

Cheers

Well I have taken ther car to vw last week and than ran a diagnostic on the car they could not find any problems, they say the turbo is boosting as should and no leaks etc. Would this vaccum hoser damge been picked up on via the diagnostic?I still have the occasional problem where the car does not start all too well, kinda turns and turn and then comes to life

Did you have the glow plugs checked ?

Long starting times indicate sometimes failing glow plugs . But if you say the car is "flatter" the exhaust is surely the problem . Because a diesel only needs glow plugs for startup . It sounds to me like the turbo is still fine . Not to worry about .

You may get a small gain in power, nothing major. More importantly, it helps prevent heat build up after the turbo. Many, including me have run without the cat and exhaust box with no issues at all.

It turned out not to be related to the decat, they installed the H&R springs the same day and unplugged the water bottle sensor. While reversing the car off the ramp after the decat the one guy plugged the sensor in while the car was running and put the car into limp mode. Errors cleared and all was fine. Never had any issues with the decat.

We both never really believed it was the decat, it was the strangest thing ever though but makes sense now that you mention the unplugged sensor...
