Buying a used car? Check its history online

So you've scoured the classifieds and used-car dealerships and think you've found your dream machine: a clean, low-mileage, blue Opel Corsa with one careful lady owner.

But you no longer have to rely on the smiling salesman's assurance that the car is as good as it looks. Now you can check out its pedigree by logging onto Transunion's Auto Check web page.

http://www.myautoinfo.co.za/

By providing the car's engine and VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) you can confirm that it's indeed a blue Opel Corsa, the year it was first registered, how many times it's been financed, whether it's still under finance and whether there are any security alerts on the vehicleThe database contains all cars, bakkies and bikes registered in South Africa in the last 25 years.

You can also see whether the asking price is fair and market-related.

The database contains all cars, bakkies and bikes registered in South Africa in the last 25 years.

The service was developed by motor information company TransUnion which publishes the authoritative Auto Dealers' Guide used by car salesmen to determine the values of cars, bakkies and motorcycles in South Africa.

TransUnion's Mike von Hone explained: "The site gives ordinary individuals access to essential peace-of-mind information when buying or selling a used car, light-commercial vehicle or motorbike."

The service costs R105 for a two-in-one Auto Check report of a vehicle's market value and verifying its pedigree, R92 just for the verification or R21 to check the value onlyThe reports can be viewed immediately.

The reports can be viewed immediately with an online credit card payment.

Future plans for the site include being able to verify whether the vehicle has been stolen (TransUnion is awaiting the SAPS's blessing to make this information public) and the vehicle's insurance history, which would tell you whether it's been in an accident.

I really like the future plans of the site in order to check if a vehicle is stolen.
