WOW! Talk about a blast from the past.

Maybe I should make a plan to update this thread sometime...

Thanks for the compliment man. As far as I am concerned the only way to do something properly is to do it yourself. And with a bit of technical ability and the wealth of knowledge on this forum, you can pretty much do anything to your VW.
thats why you helping me with my mp9 conversion, right?

I will be in Uncle Rays area this week end so might give him a shout tonight and see if he can help.

After re-reading the ENTIRE thread again - im opting to get mine done in the next couple of months!!

Thanks for re-igniting the plans to go 2.0!
Im going the easier way tho - 2E bottom end with balanced internals.

With my headwork and current setup - im hoping for a 85+kw @ the wheels with a great torque boost - 150+nm!

Hi all, it's been a long time. Been without a PC for months & months, but I'm sorted now.

Yip, this thread is one of my favourites, I printed the entire thread & filed it, believe me I read it say once a week, but everytime I read it, feels like the first time everytime. Can't get enough of it.
Nice one Macman. :)

no idea , stock mp9 head with 276 cam gave me 81kw and 175Nm ATW @ reef level...

around 96kw and 204Nm ATW @ coast

im pretty sure 288 cam with flowed head will be only as strong as how well it has been done :D

Macman - did you ever consider increasing your compression?

From what I have heard - more compression = more power. With more power comes the requirement for a higher octane fuel - right?

Any idea what the highest compression can be obtained on pump fuel?

Also would you recommend increasing compression to gain HP?

What weight was taken off the fly wheel? How did you decide on that weight?

iirc he is running very similar compression to me , think he settled on 10.5:1 whereas i am 10.6:1

can only run 95 octane fuel at the compression , raising anymore would most likely require octane boosters :D

Nope, it is my daily drive so I didn't want to have to worry about pinging issues.

Higher compression and/or advanced timing will require higher octane fuel to prevent detonation.

On 95 I wouldn't go higher than 10.5:1.

I would look at other methods of increasing power before trying to increase it by raising the compression ratio.

My flywheel is a stock 210mm flywheel.

Nope I am running the stock 10.0:1.

I can run on 93 or 95, but the motor prefers 95.

The easiest way is to skim the head.

Well we run similar times on the 1/4 mile. The 1st time we raced on the road his was slightly quicker than mine. Then the next time we raced we were dead even, but I don't think his car was mapped 100%. Then the last time we raced his was a fair bit quicker because my clutch is slipping like a ****, but even with a new clutch I think his still would have been quicker. Time to get mine chipped too. :)

I think my cars around 105kw, with 180 nm, iirc! Thats a "stock" 2,0l 288

Excellent thread you have here MacMan :D

Im currently in the process of upgrading my 1.3 carb Shuttle to a 1.8 bottom end, re-bored with 2.6 caravelle pistons, a 2.0 8v flowed head with Rsi throttle bodies, a cam, not sure what cam  and Gotec engine management oh, and lightened flywheel and BMW fuel rail and pump. Im sure theres a bit more extra bits but cant remember now. A tuner in Durbs is doing it, but taking ages to complete.

Anyway, approx. how much would a good branch and exhaust cost for this type of setup? Preferably from Viper.

Also, did you re-register your car as a rebuilt golf or how did you go about that stuff with the licensing dept.?

Thanks.

A branch and stainless system from Viper will cost you about R3k.

I am still using my old block which was re-bored, so no need to re-register.

Cool. Thanks.

I think the guy doing the installation will take the car for engine clearance, then I'll have to re-register with the new engine. Hope its as simple as it sounds.
