E85 Z4 2.5

Post by Rascal69 »

Last week we received a call based on a referral from the bmw z3/z4 group. The customer recently purchased a very clean 2005 model z4 2.5i with 108k on the clock. He had the vehicle serviced when he took ownership but wanted the following done in order to get a better understanding of the vehicle he just purchased.
1. Diagnostics and tune up
2. Full inspection

So we arranged for him to drop the vehicle off with me.

Image

Battery was recently replaced so we could jump straight into diagnostics
Image

A few issues presented itself
Image

List of stored errors
Image

After diagnostics , we managed to get everything sorted except the PCD sensor which was faulty and needed to be replaced
Image

Only one error stored.
Image

We checked oil
Image

the car was recently serviced by someone else but owner says it’s sluggishly we decided to pull the plugs and see how they were burning and if they are the correct plugs
Got them out
Image

They are the correct plugs
Image

Removed the maf sensor and cleaned it
Image

Image

Went around and checked the wheels and suspension
Image

Sump tray removed ... showing some oil leak
Image

Spotted a leaking sump gasket which will be addressed during the next service
Image

Checked the coolant. This car seems to have the red coolant like VW’s and Audi’s but the level is fine.
Image

Brake fluid a bit dirty but not hectic. Will flush and bleed next time.
Image

Spotted a cracked front shock mount.
Image

Engine mounts are worn and collapsed a few mm’s, should be replaced in the future as well.
Image

Belts look good, no need to replace now
Image

Lastly We reset the User Inputs and Adaptations so that the vehicle runs alot smoother and can adapt to the owners driving style... This also brought the average fuel consumption down... and we are now done.
Image

Owner now has all the details he was looking for and can plan his future maintenance.

So we had this vehicle booked in for the sump gasket replacement leak as the owner was tired of the mess it was causing and also wanted to get the car freshened up for a cape town trip next month.

We got it on the lift and started with it

The new parts

Ran the engine with flush and then drained the oil.

Some pics of the mess

All the main stuff out the way

Sump removed

Also found some pieces of rubber in there from one of the old orings
Image

Took everything out to wash

Then we started to reassemble , we replaced the engine mounts as well. Do it properly the first time around.

All done

The customer was going to collect it after this but asked us to replace the worn components of the front and rear suspension as well. And we started to source prices and parts for quoting .
