BMW Z4 3.0 in need of TLC

Post by Rascal69 »

3 weeks ago a lady from PTA got in touch with us and wanted some help with her car which was purchased a year ago. She had the car at 2 independent workshops and BMW themselves who quoted her a staggering amount to fix the car. So she asked if she could bring the car to us and have it properly checked out as a second opinion.

The vehicle was dropped off with us and we immediately got to work ...
Image

We begin with diagnostics as the car was not seeing a lot of modules after bmw attempted to run diagnostics. Start with checking the battery , it was low so put the car on charge and get the battery up before plugging in the laptop
Image

1st round of diagnostics show the lack of Comms to a lot of modules .
Image

After reprogramming the abs and airbag modules we ran diagnostics again a 3rd time and now we can connect to a lot more
Image

Also checked the fuses
Image

And the wiring , just Incase.
Image

Next we needed to address the coolant leak
Image

So we started stripping the cooling system
Image

Image

Image

Things were brittle and breaking
Image

Image

Started collecting parts for the repairs and services needed
Image

Image

Cooling system
Image

Image

Image

Image

Filled up with Coolant and distilled water mix
Image

Belts, tensioner and rollers
Image

Image

Image

Old belt was wearing unevenly
Image

New parts fitted and torqued to spec
Image

Control arm bushes worn and not seating correct
Image

New vs old

Shot Mr :hi:

Yeah its driving like a different car now... we also reset the saved user inputs on the ECU so the car felt completely different and had to relearn the owners driving style/throttle inputs... this also made it a bit more nippy too... :driving:

Just for interests sake if you don't mind sharing the costs that BMW quoted her and the price that you charged.

BMW wanted 60k and was not going to address a lot of the issues for that massive amount .

Re: BMW Z4 3.0 in need of TLC

Post by Rascal69 »

Received a call during the first week in May asking if would be able to do the shocks and suspension on the vehicle . I agreed and the car found it’s way into the lift and we said to the customer that now is the time to address the oil leaks which we informed her of the last time.

Pics of the mess.

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Oil leaks from the engine tappet cover, sump and oil filter housing then eventually runs past the gearbox and burns on the exhaust.

The plan was to replace the suspension while the subframe was out for the sump removal.

So we went out and started collecting parts.

Image

Image
Image
Image

A small fortune was spent on parts but we chose all OEM or high quality after market options .

We ran engine flush to break down as much of the sludge as possible .
Image
Image
Image

Then washed and cleaned things
Image

Image

Removed the OFH
Image

What a mess
Image

Cleaned it up in prep for the new seal and OFH refitting
Image

OFH and alternator back in place
Image

Nice and clean
Image

Next we pull the tappet cover off . The rubber he tuned into a plastic texture and was just breaking into pieces. Sent video to customer.
Image
Image

Then we pull the front subframe with steering and suspension
Image

It’s full of grease / oil
Image

Image

Now that it’s washed we can strip and replace the steering and suspension components.
Image
Image
Image

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Engine mounts are shot! New vs old.
Image
Image
Image
Image

Even gearbox mounts where done and needed replacing.
Image

When we dropped the sump, we saw that the gasket failed . The glue that holds the metal and rubber togther had separated .
Image
Image
Image

Washing the sump before installing with new gasket
Image

Sump and subframe installed. New steering and suspension items fitted.
Image
Image
Image

Tappet cover washed and ready for install with new gasket.
Image
Image
Image

Oil filter replaced and installed
Image

Ceratech added and then oil filled.
Image

Replaced dip stick orings
Image

Stripped rebuilt and fitted rear shocks with new bilstein units.
Image
Image

Checked once more for any leaks before installing the new lower front tray we purchased .
Image

Charged the battery
Image

Took it for balancing and alignment
Image

Washed it , then asked the customer to pay and collect Image
Image

You can only imagine how good it felt after all this work was done.

Really appreciate these well detailed posts of such work being carried out.
The small fortune that the customer spend on this car is all worth it as the car must be driving like new.
