Dulling down bright tweeters...

Post by Gti3 »

Any ideas on how this can be done? I have a set of Kicker CS splits and finding that the tweeter is much 'louder' than the driver. I'd prefer to dull it down a bit so that the midrange is a bit more levelled with the highs.

Fitted in an Amarok, doors have been sound deadened.

The CS crossovers have little switch on the side which shows "0 +3 +6".
Put the switch on "0".

Yup running them on 0 at the moment. Do you think covering them with some cloth is a good idea?

What is the rest of the setup?
What headunit? Amp? Crossover settings on the radio/amp/both?

Adding cloth or similar won't do much, but I have read on car audio forums that adding two or three layers of decent grille cloth over bright tweeters helps.
You can aim the tweeter towards the windscreen or downwards or away from the normal position, that is the easiest and simplest way.
Or you can add a resistor or capacitor to the + wire between the crossover and the tweeter. But there I am not sure of how it gets worked out what resistor/capacitor to add.
I simply tuned the frequencies down on my setup because the tweeters were also a bit bright. Headunit has a 13 channel EQ built in, and I simply tuned the high frequencies above 10K hz downwards until the tweeters sounded better.

Google an LPAD. It's a small circuit (normally just a cap and a resistor) that can drop the signal 1/2/3dB.

Head unit is a pioneer AvH 205BT. Amp is Infinity Reference 704A. HU has EQ as well as crossover, the Amp has crossover, running the Kicker split set on HP at approx 80hz.

The remaining 2 channels on the Amp are running a Kicker SVC 8inch sub.

How old are the tweeters? They always start off sounding very bright and generally smooths out.

The midbass will also play in and become more punchy over time.

They are approx 6 months old, hardly gets played though, as the vehicle is only used on weekends

The drivers yes, the tweeters are on the dashboard low down facing forward, the sound was too separated when the tweeter was in the A pillar factory location

Things to keep in mind with tweeters is that dashboards and windscreens are reflective and will amplify brightness.

Facing them away from that will work wonders. Sounds like you have them bouncing off the dash.

These things become a damn dark art but when they work it’s magic.

Placing them on the sail panel behind the mirrors on the door can help too.

That is what I did in my Caddy.
The stock tweeter location by the base of the windscreen was rubbish, no matter what direction I aimed them.
Sail panels and aimed towards the seats and sound was instantly better.
