However, the addition of Waze on IOS12 has changed my life. I don't mind not seeing the song names in the hud as the steering controls still change the music and as i jump in, i choose a playlist and shuffle through.
How is trying to make a phone call for you using CarPlay?

On the head unit - tap the call button. SIri politely asks, "who would like to call JAY--SHAN?" In my best english accent, state the name and it calls.

I need to give this voice command thing another try  It frustrates me that I can't use the steering wheel controls or the dashboard cluster screen anymore to make calls but not as much as how I can't keep Waze open while making a call.

Thanks JAY-SHAN

Waze, just tap waze icon again while on the call and it will open up waze again.

I tried that when I was dialing my girlfriend but it just killed the call :???: I also had an issue where I received a call and could not hear the other person at all but they could hear me. I am giving CarPlay another go though so will see how it goes...

Waze, with voice control, works well in Android auto and it does a good job recognising my Indian voice. :)

I have been using CarPlay on a daily basis and am slowly adjusting to it but still find the lack of at least telephone information in the dashboard cluster irritating. Take this morning for instance, my girlfriend called on the way to work, the main entertainment screen went blank and the dashboard cluster simply says Apple CarPlay so I couldn't see who was calling. Like I said, an irritation more than a train smash but it does put a damper on the experience, like CarPlay crashing at times and restarting itself.

Hi guys!

This has been quite an informative thread!

Quick question - I'm looking at a 2016 Caddy Alltrack that does have the App-Connect icon in the menu, but doesn't want to connect to CarPlay. Am I correctly assuming that it would be a case of having it activated (via a software update and activation key)? Unfortunately I didn't take down the hardware and software versions of it.

I still have the standard headset with Infotainment unit in my 2016 Polo 6C GTi,

Can Carplay be activated afterwards or do I need to replace my radio?

You can purchase the activation code from VW. It's about R3.5k

Thanks,

I spoke to my local VW dealer today and according to him my radio is not compatible and I need to get a compatible headset, the weird thing for me is that visually my radio looks exactly the same as the units which came standard with Carplay,

Is Carplay then something you need to install in the car?

I don't know which radio you have, but the Composition Media player's from 2015 onward have App Connect. If its not activated, you can purchase the code and have it activated at VW.

What radio do you have? VW App Connetc is pre-installed but in some cases needs to be activated which VW charges for.

Most likely just needs to be activated, most compatible radios have it pre-installed but not activated, some like my 2015 SatNav unit had it activated.

It's definitely the radio, because I used the same lightning cable that worked in another, newer Caddy.

Apple CarPlay on iOS13 is also a nice improvement. Album art on the music app and a new home view with multiple active tiles.

You have to buy the activation code from VW if it's not installed already. It will on work on the MiB 2 and above.
