Hello! Junior seeking guidance

Post by pjp »

Hello everyone!

I am an absolute newbie - to both the forum and to VWs/Audis in general. I've read through a number of threads here and love the sense of community you have here.

I was hoping you guys could help me. I am a young guy who wants to get into cars. I don't know much but am eager to learn. I have just started a new job in JHB and am considering buying a new car. I have been looking around and am eyeing an Audi TT mk2 (coupe, manual). My thinking is that for the same price I can either get a more modern, lower-end car (Hyundai, etc.) or go for an older car in a higher bracket like the TT.

I have a few questions regarding this beauty and was hoping you might be able to shed some light on the subject. First, I was wondering whether this will be a good daily driver? I need a reliable car for my work. Secondly, do you think this is a wise purchase, or should I be more conservative and go for a modern, lower-end vehicle? Thirdly, what are the maintenance costs on a car like this and is it relatively fuel efficient? Lastly, is there any major difference between older mk2 models (2007ish) and the newer ones (2013ish)? Obviously there will be a difference in price, but would it be penny wise and pound foolish to buy an older model that's cheaper? I am aiming for the region of R150k.

I guess my main concern is whether this would be an unwise and impractical car for me at this stage, or whether it would be an exciting, viable one.

I would appreciate any help or guidance you can offer!

Cheers!

Welcome to the forum

Regarding your question, buying an older car to commute daily has can have its challenges as the type of a car, how it was managed and also the distance you will be driving all add to making the decision.

You dont want to find yourself being stuck on y our way to work or with a huge repair bill that is unexpected.
You have a decent budget, do you need a hatchback/ Sedan, 2 or 4 door and how long you planning on keeping this car plus are you DIY person or you have a trusty garage that will work on your car.

Plenty of things to consider, but hope you find what you looking for?

First of all welcome.

As it's your daily driver and reliability is a key factor, I would absolutely NOT recommend buying a 10+year old Turbo car as your choice of commuting weapon. I have yet in my life to see a frugal forced induction motor.

A 5 year old or younger car of any of the major brands is ideal. Small cars don't necessarily mean low spec as far as creature comforts go. Keep in mind that we in Gauteng rack up the miles pretty quickly, so having a car with a complex engine can get very costly to keep running when you factor milage into things. Balance of factory warranty if any thing breaks.

As for your fuel consumption question, any modern economy car will beat the Audi all day, all week at the petrol pumps, no matter how you drive them. I get +/- 500km from a tank from my i10, using a lead shoe and A/C on all the time. Tank has a 35l capacity. That's 14.3km/l consumption. You would need to drive using wind power in any turbo car to even catch a smell of those numbers. I think you would average 6-7km/l in a turbo Audi, less if you got the 3.2 model, driving in the traffic

I am not bragging, I am just pointing out some facts, neither am I saying don't get the Audi, just be sure you know what you are in for before you start. Older cars can be amazing and rewarding things to own and play with, but I would suggest you rather have the Audi as a second car.

There's an old saying on here that lots of us don't listen to, but it's still true, Don't Mod your daily.
