I'm going to throw this out there as it is something I have been looking at and thinking about over the past few years. Why do so few actual club members take part in the circuit type events (gymkhana)? Are a lot of guys not confident in their driving abilities? Because when there is a drag day, then everyone and their gran will attend

Even if you aren't the best in the twisties, why not just join in and have some fun, at the end of the day that is the main thing, that you have a blast
I'm literally can't evening!

I think there is a greater risk of getting it wrong in the turns and having to deal with the consequences.

That said this was my first attempt at this event, I didn't know we even had it until this year.
Can't wait to do it again, will make some time to get my car better prepped next time.

It was the 1st event of this kind that both myself and the wife have attended and from our perspective, it was tons of fun! Definitely not the fastest for sure but I tell you, from my perspective, it beats drags hands down.

Nothing worse than waiting for hours in line, only to spend a combined amount of time on track that is less than one lap of the gymkhana circuit.

That being said, getting the perfect launch, perfect shifts and running a PB on the strip is very rewarding.

I'll definitely do another event like this, hopefully can improve on my terribad times hehe, oh and remember to stop in the allotted area, I failed at that dismally roflmao
Fast and cheap won't be reliable, reliable and cheap won't be fast, fast and reliable won't be cheap.

Pfffttt. Plenty traction you just have a heavy foot for a small guy.
Says the guy with 4 wheel drive.

I tried feathering the throttle ... sometimes :).
Didn't help much so I thought screw the times ill just enjoy the drifting.

Definately found more traction on the way home.
There was definitely no feathering in that last session from you!

I made sure i was light on the throttle and there was plenty traction

After reviewing the lap times times, your light throttle action definately shows up. No wonder you found all that traction.

This and also the punishment a car takes. Remember on a FWD you're putting all the power through the wheels and also turning with the same wheels, CVs take a beating. If your car isn't in good nick to start with you can easily kill a clutch, and if your brakes fade out on you, body damage can occur.

The main thing I think is ego. For some reason people are afraid to get teased if they do kak out there on a track. Screw it, every opportunity to hammer your car around a track is a learning experience - I would have entered my car if I had it there.

Next time...

Pretty happy with my times, track was slippery so was not exactly pushing the braking limits pre corner, later braking may have seen a slight reduction in times but what a blast!

I drive a BMW and was afraid that something would break if I put it through the twisties. If I still had the Citi/Jetta/Polo I would've had it on the track. Tyres are also quite expensive in the 18" variety and a heavy car chows a few thousand kays rather quickly.

That said, I can't wait for the Skidpan event!

Yup, everything literally polished off. Just "kissed" the tires.

I guess that second lap didn't help my time :)

You were very quick on your 1st lap, one of the quickest for the day! Your second lap you also didnt pass the cones, but we gave you a time in any case. I reckon you might have given the Scooby a go!

I am glad everything is OK

This is my favorite event format and yes it takes some out of the tires , but the track is slippery and the car tends to side rather than grip so less tire wear compare to Kyalami or even Zwartkops main circuit. Most of us are willing to go fast through traffic over potholes and around corners with side walks, but they are not willing to test their skills around a small track with relatively low speeds totally controlled. That is one of the reasons i took my Touareg around there just to see what it can do and of course it was mega fun

Next year i want to compete for fastest time in the golf with fwd so lets see how that turns out

You might need to get the golf completed quicker than you think Image
