Changing tyre size on G7

Post by Reegz »

Gents,

My 7 Gti has 225/35 19's upfront with 235/35 19's at the back.

With our roads being as **** as they are I tend to be quite heavy on tyres and replace them often.

Would like to be in a position where I can move them around between front and rear as required.

Question is, can I fit the 235/35's to the front without any issues?

TIA

Yes, you can, You can even go up to 245's
As long as you don't have some bazar offset wheel you will be fine.

235/35 is the OEM 19" tire size for mk7's

Is it normal to have a different width tyre back to front on GTi's? I remember my R having teh same size/width/etc. tyre all round, just like my Touareg.

My 35 has the same size all around. Not sure why this one is different.
The 225's are just not suited for our roads.

Yep, low profile tyres take a beating on our roads, even my Toaureg's 275/45/20's take a beating.

No, standard GTI (mk5/6/7/8) sizes are 225/45/17, 225/40/18 and 235/35/19 all round.

People buy odd sizes mostly because of price, or availability, Or sometimes to clear the fenders.

Are you planning on changing al 4 tyres or only the 2 225s? If all 4 then yeah you can get 245/35s, They are nice and chunky and its the correct size for 8.5J wheels. They are a chunky price too, I'm running these on my S3 and they are awesome.

If you only plan on changing the 225's then match the 235's at the back.

Realistically you will in all cases (except the 17s) have low profile tyres, so some consideration is needed. The 235's will be better than the 225s

Ultimately, yes the idea is to have all 4 tyres the same size. I was hoping to get away with only changing two for now. January's 90 days has a lingering effect.

If it means putting the new 245's in the back and bringing the current 235's from the rear to the front, I can live with that. The rears still have decent tread.

It's a 2016 Clubsport; all standard. Won't have issues with fenders or spacing will I?

So I took a chance and reached out to VW to see what their recommendations would be.
They did indeed respond and stated that both front and rear should be running the same size tyres - so not sure why previous owner went this route.

Anyhoo, recommended sizes are:-
225/35 R 19 88Y
235/35 R 19 91Y

Sooo... looks like I just I have to live with the 35's and drive slower to miss those damn potholes!

I'm the villain in my own story.

So found myself knee deep in a pothole around the Sunninghill area.
Tyre popped immediately and I could hear the gentle whistling as the air escaped while whatever remained of my soul died inside.
Tyres are less than a year old!!

Car has been parked off since last week while I battle the odds to find another matching tyre. Seems like the Royal Black line is out of favour for whatever budget line has replaced it.

Man, I miss my citi golf days.

Bad luck Reegz. I had my car sit for a month and a half while I waited for two replacement tyres to match what I had before, after popping two thanks to a pothole not marked on waze. Seems people don't report potholes on waze much anymore.

The roads being what they are make it nigh on impossible to keep accurate data.

The guys said they'd have the tyre by Monday. After an update yesterday it seems it might be Monday next week :-)

Lawd! I'm so done with this tyre shenanigans!

So after waiting for a week for this darn tyre to get delivered we discover that it's the wrong variant. Yay for me!

Being fed up of driving the old man's rental, went ahead and slapped it on. Decided a couple days later to rotate the tyres so that the rears - which are a matching pair - can be moved to the front.

Only to discover that the one of the rears has a flat spot and the other's rim is slightly buckled.

Man I miss my Citi Golf days!
