VWCSA Presents - VKC Time Attack

Post by DieterMK5 »

Hi everyone!

We know you’ve all been waiting with bated breath for our first performance event of the year, and we’ve been waiting to bring it to you! With the popularity of short-track racing, we’ve decided to return to Vereeniging Karting Circuit on Sunday, the 25th of April. It’s a great opportunity for the regulars to practice and an even better chance for newbies to experience some of the safest fun you can have with your car.

Image

Limited to 60 cars, there will be plenty of time for everyone to get a few sessions in. As always, COVID-19 protocols apply. No mask - no entry.

Venue: Vereeniging Karting Circuit - https://goo.gl/maps/tLSFjD4vN71frDXq9
Date: Sunday 25 April
Time: 8am sharp
Cost: R550 for members / R700 for non-members including timing transponders, spectators free!

Please use the following link to complete your event entry - https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1mFW3_i ... paFdw/edit

See you there!

Don't you know how it works these days, Only free stance events pull the people. How dare you put a hot hatch on a circuit there is no insta likes for that.

These are screen grabs off the app that was used on the day. I just removed surnames in case people had issues. No idea of which car is which I'm afraid (except for mine and a couple of others). Admins delete please if you're posting something different or there is a privacy issue.

I think these kinds of events are becoming more and more difficult to pull off as people struggle financially to prep and participate, sponsors are hard to come by, tracks are expensive etc... so again hats off to VWCSA for pulling this one together. It is slim pickings for the other brands which is why there is support from them as well. Track events are definitely few and far between vs. the park offs, dyno days, drags etc.

Lurking here hoping for more pics of the day (or the official pics) I didn't get to take many.

Post by Heisenburg »

This past weekend saw the Volkswagen Club of South Africa head out to 2021’s second performance event of the year and one of our favourites: short-track racing at VKC in Vereeniging.

Given the social difficulties we are currently experiencing, we had a good turnout of 35 drivers, piloting everything from the likes of Hondas and Nissans to BMWs and Minis. We also had two eye-catching supercars - a vivid green Mercedes-AMG GT-R and a blood red Porsche 911 Carrera GTS - along with a host of more affordable (and more chuckable) VAGs.

The tone was set for some great racing and one of the first seriously quick drivers out of the block was Jared in his 3.2-liter 8N Audi TT, whose naturally-aspirated motor lit up the track within the first few corners.

Even though the track is a bit small for the supercars to show their true power and speed, we got loads of entertainment from the smaller cars, which impressed more than you may expect. The short track really equalises performance, which meant that despite a breakage on his racecar 135i, we got to see Marco in a stock BMW 320i with only semi-slick tyres outperform himself and stick with AWD cars. The man’s skill and perseverance paid off with a time of 58.937, giving him 2nd place in the RWD class and missing 1st by a mere 0.147 seconds.

Tony’s DC5 Honda Integra Type R was an absolute treat to watch once again, showing us how capable a FWD car can be – he’d go on to set a FWD time that humbled many of the more powerful, more expensive toys out there. Meanwhile, Kylie’s 350Z held the RWD banner high with yet another tight, clean showing through the tricky turns.

We then broke for some lunch served up by the friendly staff at VKC before we were off for the second part of the day. Pieter, the owner of the 911 GTS, decided to let Tony behind the wheel as earlier that day Tony’s Integra was haunting the Porsche on the track. Imagine how quick Tony will be in a German car if he gets to play in the Porsche more often?

As cool as these rides are, we have to mention our old-school VW fanatics Ashley and Nic who showed that even a Mk. 2 Jetta can be fun, fast, or a handful – depending on how you drive it.

All in all, it was a successful day with great weather and no off-track incidents (besides Nic impersonating a Honda on a few occasions and chopping the grass). Nothing represented the diversity of cars at our events more than the top 3 racers, all of which have different drivetrains and come from different parts of the world. Oh, and for a change, none of the top three were turbocharged either:

Winner: Jared Rossouw - Audi TT 3.2 quattro (8N): 58.043
Runner-up: Tony Szabo – Honda Integra Type R (DC5): 58.257
Third Place: Clinton Pather - BMW Z4 (E85): 58.790

A couple of honourable mentions:

1. The WRC Couple’s Polo That Could – It was great seeing a couple have so much fun in a stock standard Polo, which truly proves that you can have fun in any car. We hope this encourages more of our followers and members to join our track days - regardless of the level of performance.

2. The Crazy Mini – Of all the cars on circuit, this Mini was surely one of the most entertaining and one of the most spiritedly driven - so much so that it ran on three wheels through most of the corners, catching up to cars with way more power.

We had a blast hosting this and can’t wait to do it again. Keep an eye on our socials to stay abreast of our upcoming events so you don’t miss out on our next get-together, be it social or performance. Cheers and thanks from the committee, and we’ll see you at see you at our May social Carwash Event.
