2004 VW Citi 1.3 Chico Diagnostic plug

Post by Craig_za »

Good day all,

I have inherited madams old 1.3 chico (bought her the new 1.6 tdi jetta) as a runaround vehicle. She is way cheaper to drive than my current vehicle - Alfa 156 2.0 TS.

Anyway, after being screwed a few times at her local maintenance dude for ridiculous prices on services, I decided to take over the TLC myself as I thought she had a relatively straight forward engine.

So far, I have sorted her idle, mixture and timing out, and she is running great. Fuel economy is much better. Only thing is that she is a bit flat on the higher mid end. I think this is normal on the 1.3 as she is still a carb unit. But either way, she is comming up for her 120K service - Got the Haynes service manual so I should be ok - I think. :fear:

I noticed this morning, that she as a diagnostic plug under the ashtray. You pull it out and there is this vag-com port. What on earth is this for? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I was under the impression that I could still work on this type of motor without the software.

Now I am a bit afraid to change anything as I don't know what this would disable.

Thanks in advance

Thanks,

Is that all it is for? This car does not have an imobilizer installed. And I cant see that the key is anything but a standard cut key, iow - there doesn't seem to be a transponder or anything in the key?

So are you telling me I can still fiddle in the engine?

One other question, what mk number does this golf belong to? Is it the mk1?

Cheers

Shot 1.9,

I will be doing the timing belt and all those other goodies soon - about 1500K's to go. :fear:

I take it the Citi era is only South African, because I cannot find bugger all information about them in any other forums?

Cheers

Yea just like the Vivo's but i stand to be corrected, Only our country over charge so much for cars that we need to remove just about every luxury part and create these "budget" cars

First time attempting the belt?? :fear:

Make sure you have the right tools and do alot of research as a timing belt installed wrong can cost a hell of a lot more then someone else's cheap labour.

PS start a rides thread, take lots of pix and you'll have quite a bit of support.

Shot 1.9,

Will take some pics soon.

It will be my first time on a veedub golf - but have done a few Alfas and some older cars. So I think I should be ok - I hope.

I have been checking the forums out - to get good pictures of what the haynes manual doesn't show, and I have had the covers off a few times over weekends causing endless chaos with madam just to check, re-check and make sure of all the marks. So I should be ok, but will get my old man to supervise. It is cheaper to buy him a few beers than for me to replace the engine.

The one good thing is that this cow does not have points - that would have really had me broken.

Cheers

It's there. Separate the two plastic halves and point the metal part of the key away from you. Transponder is the small grey/black block on the left side of the key.

Shot chaps,

I can see you people are going to get me into kak with the missus already.

But hey, she got the jetta - so now the golf is mine.

So this plug is only for programming a new key, it has nothing to do with engine control?

Cheers
