The 2 brown ones are ground, one is signal for the ECU and the other is signal for the temperature gauge in the dash.

As long as the ECU gets its signal from the correct pin on the sender, then you will be fine. IIRC the correct wire is grey / green.

Howzit gents.... does it have to be connected to the cluster? Cant I leave it as is because the heat guage will still work on the existing harness??

Whats the purpose in connecting the signal wire to the cluster? If I do connect the wire, where on the cluster is it, or can I not bridge it somewhere in the engine bay?

Then what is the 4th pin for?

The 4 pin sender is basically 2 senders in one. Each sender has a ground and a signal wire.

From a thread I asked the same question. Panic Mechanic and Maranou helped me out.
the 4 pin sender is basically exactly what you want - it is in reality 2 separate water temp senders in one device. It's also very easy to see which wires are paired. Take an ohm meter and measure a pair of wires. If you get a resistance then that is a pair. If you measure two wires and it has no value then they belong to the other pair.
So take this figure
1 2
3 4

if you meaure 1,3 and you get no value and then measure 1,2 and get a value then you will know that 1,2 is one pair and 3,4 is the other pair.

As for you other questions - sorry can't help. Don't use that system.
Pin 1 and 3 onplug at water temp sensor go to management and 2 gets earthed and 4 go to dash temp gauge.
Hope it helps.

Re: wiring question

If you converting from carb to F1 (MP9) the original temp gauge wire just went onto a sensor on the water outlet pipe on the front of the head.

As per my post 1 and 3 go to the ECU, number 2 gets earthed (As the whole housing is plastic and not metal like the original one) and 4 goes to your Dash temp gauge.

Image

On this pic I used Blue and Brown/Blue for the management. I earthed the Brown Green and connected the Yellow/Red to the original Temp Gauge wire which, if i remember correctly is also Yellow/Red. This wire should be in the original car harness.

Hope it helps once again. Good Luck.

Yes pin 1 and pin 3 go to the ECU.

Pin 1 on the sender plug goes to pin 17 on the MP9 ECU, which as I said, is ground.

Pin 3 on the sender plug goes to pin 42 on the MP9 ECU, which is the signal wire.

If I remember correct the heatgauge will read incorect as the mp9 sensor uses lower resistance, thus the gauge will show lower than actual heat

Hopefully someone has managed to sort this out? My carb to mp9 conversion almost done, car starts but fan is not coming on... i think it is due to the heat gauge not getting a signal?

Fan does not get the signal from there, it comes from a thermostat on the side of the radiator
