Help ... noise from wheels
Hi guys,
Sorry if I'm not explaining myself correctly ... but here's my story.
A guy with a Polo 1.4 Comfortline 6R (exact same spec as mine) is trading his car in, so he opted to swap his A-Line Racers for my 15 inch Polo wheels (with a small cash difference, anyway). So before we did the swap, I went for a test drive in his car. No vibrations, noises or anything... so the swap happened.
Now that the wheels are on my car, there's no alignment issues, no vibrations nothing, except for this kind of a knocking noise when slowing down... it's not a CV knocking type of noise, nor is it those noisy Dunlops.
More info: I am using the original bolts. The wheels have spigot rings... I've been to Super Quick and TWT, I think I incorrectly explained myself cause they say it's the tyres or the suspension. It's not! so I just left.
Again, sorry if I haven't explained myself correctly... it's just very irritating since the car drives fine except for that noise when slowing down. Your assistance is much appreciated.

Spoke to some guys who are more familiar with cars... they said that the bolts may be too long and might need to be trimmed a bit, or spacers in the rear. Thoughts?

Is the car lowered? Profile on tyres?pyro-zn wrote:Spoke to some guys who are more familiar with cars... they said that the bolts may be too long and might need to be trimmed a bit, or spacers in the rear. Thoughts?
If wheel bolts are too long then you'll be wobbling all over the place! Be careful. Inspect the PCD holes for any wear (any grazing), jack the car up and attempt to shift the wheel.
I think it's the wheels touching the fender lining

205/40 tyres, not lowered ... The bolts referred to are at the rear (drums)... Had a look now, PCD holes look fine... it just annoys me since the wheels were fine on the previous car.Hoosier Daddy wrote:Is the car lowered? I'll have to jack the car up when at home, hopefully the weather plays out nicely.

Take them to a proper shop and check the balancing again, can't hurtpyro-zn wrote:205/40 tyres, not lowered ... The bolts referred to are at the rear (drums)... True ... will do. By the way, I did ask Super Quick if they could balance the wheels anyway, the guy says "nah, just change your tyres".Hoosier Daddy wrote:Take them to a proper shop and check the balancing again, can't hurtpyro-zn wrote:205/40 tyres, not lowered ... Re: Help ... noise from wheels
Do you perhaps know if its coming from the front or back?
I had the issue where my bolts was a tad bit long, so when slowing down I could hear a knocking noise.

oh by the way, Super Quick directed me to Natal Power Steering after I explained what's going on ... either I was very bad at explaining the issue, or I was speaking in another language, or that guy was f*cking stupid.

Re: Help ... noise from wheels
Managed to leave early from work today ... did the right thing and went to people I know. So here's the culprit ...
Original bolts were too long. Thank you to all who responded a good end to my Monday.
Rave: G Force Tyres for assisting me just before they can close shop! Shortened bolts and Balanced the wheels (didn't want to trim the original bolts). Hopefully I didn't cause any damage...
Rant: Super Quick and Tiger Wheel & Tyre ... I think you guys make your money from stupid people ... or how do you make your money? Do you get a referral from Natal Power Steering for every customer you send away? Bunch of clowns.

Re: Help ... noise from wheels
Hope the new bolts are conical taper (normally for aftermarket wheels) and not radial, like OEM in your hand.

Yup they are. Unfortunately my OEM lock nut is radial... Was advised against it, so I'm gonna have to get an aftermarket set of lock nuts!

Re: Help ... noise from wheels
Your wheel geometry change ever so slightly when accelerating/decelerating, especially if you've got some play on your wheel bearings. It might have been just enough to cause the ends of the bolts to touch.King8v wrote:Ok,just so i understand, the longer wheel bolts created a knocking sound? How if i may ask. Haha, yeah I did, on Sunday, in the rain ...LoW n SloW wrote:have you been around the car to make sure that all the wheel bolts are tight, lol
That! The bolt ends were touching ever so slightly, that there was just a noise rather than vibrations or wheel wobble. Like Hoosier Daddy said, if it touched any more, it could have ended badly. Also, there was a case of improper bolt seating (Howie pointed out as well) ...Torker wrote:Your wheel geometry change ever so slightly when accelerating/decelerating, especially if you've got some play on your wheel bearings. The thing is, I feel rather stupid since I didn't do much research... I just took it for granted that everything will be okay since the other guy had the same guy as me. I left early and took a slow drive to work today, radio off ... no knocking noises at all. Lessons learnt... will ask Rob to check out the hubs for me when the coilies go in.

Can happen with disc brakes as well, only far more obvious & just as serious.Hoosier Daddy wrote:I'm also interested. Does this only happen on cars with drums?King8v wrote:Sorry if im being a real tit, but i wont ask if i knew.

This is due to either the length of the bolt or else the taper (or lack thereof) of the bolt head - and in some cases the spigot ring not being fitted.

Say I have a wheel that requires a taper, I place 4 tapered wheel bolts, but my lock nut is radial.
