9N3 POLO Front Suspension Rattle sorted!

Post by markfish888 »

I think I have solved the infamous 9N3 Polo rattle this weekend..

on mine at least, please investigate on yours and let us know!

it is NOT: LCA rubbers> done (money wasted)
Shock Mountings & Swivel bearing>done (money wasted)
CV's and ball joints> was on my way to buy on saterday before i decided to have a propper look again.

IT IS THE BLOODY BRAKES! THE CALLIPER IS MOVING AND HITTING THE LOWER EAR OF THE HUB WHERE PADS SLIDE. (FS-III type callipers)

The three spring tabs on the pads to be more precise. On my car the I bent the big one (the one that is facing forward) on both inner & outer pads to get them into the calliper, resulting in not enough tension exerted on calliper alowing it to move . I Could move the callipper with my fingers. If you hit it with a rubber mallet, clang, clang clang!

Then at the lower ear of the hub where the pads slide and bottom of the calliper hooks onto, is loose and vibrates , resulting in the flippen rattle!
(I DID NOTICE WHEN I BRAKE NOISE WENT AWAY A LITTLE..)

I rebent the tabs for a much tighter fit, drove over every piece of brick paving
i could find on sunday, NOISE GONE!!!!!!!!

I also noticed that the Slider Pins And their rubber guides in calliper are on their way out too. Will do that this weekend.

I hope this helps a few guys from redoing their entire front suspension for nothing.

Great going. Very happy to hear you found that dreaded knock. I suppose I will also give it a shot and hope I land up with the same results as you.

What pads are those? needs to be a nice tight fit into the caliper.

mine are ATE, but all for 256mm polo 9n3 look like these, BUT NOT GTI & TDI

Notice the three shiny spring tabs. Unfortunately rim is in way of the spot that calliper moves and hits.
