Mk4 GTI 132kw - Exhaust Smoke

Post by I_FLY_GTI »

Hi guys,

Wondering if anybody can help. My car has been smoking (white smoke) for some time now but very intermitant and only while coasting in gear, never while accelerating. Took a drive to Durban on Thursday for the weekend and on my way there while coasting in 6th the car started smoking, but smoking so much that I struggled to see the car in my rear view, it done this 3-4 times while in Durban. As soon as you put the accelerator down all the smoke gets puffed out and the car stops smoking - the weird thing is that the car is not running short on oil.

Any advice will appreciated.

Hi

Welcome !

On your problem I recall having a conversation with one of the other forum users can't recall whom but I do recall a reply that said that there isn't any concern apparently it is left fuel. In the system and normally left over fuel.
I did read some where that it was turbo seals but no one could confirm that.
I am sure Tiaan would reply sortly, some really knowledgable guys on here!

1 of at least 3 options
1) turbo seals
2) valve stem seals
3) brake master leaking and have filled up booster.

I have noticed, driving at night and boosting hard some smoke in the rear view mirror as well, totally oposite from your scenario. Need to have my turbo checked just to be safe

Thanks guys for all your input.

@Velo-GP - My mileage is currently is 152000km.

@Gizmo20VT - I have never had to top up water ever since doing the cambelt at 130000km, the temperature of the motor does not really make a difference it has never smoked when taking the first drive in the morning. After driving about 300km driving to Durban it started smoking - so it really varies.

I forgot to mention that the car does not smoke everyday, it sometimes does it once a week or every second day. Its so weird that it only smokes when not accelerating... Power is fine, car boosting at 0,8 bar (stock).

smokes on idle and low speed because the oil gets a chance to burn
on acceleration you wont realy notice it...

i had a valve system seal problem. The car use to smoke on cold start(like a fire burning behind my car) and after driven for about a km it would go away so opposite to your situation.

Check your entire pcv system out. If that turns out ok start looking at turbo seals or valve stem seals
