020 4S on a 2.0 8v?

Post by Ry@n »

Good day

I'm looking to do a gearbox swap soon and was wondering if the 020 4S ratios would be to long on my polo?

here are the ratios : http://www.brokevw.com/020ratios.html

Unless your motor is turbo charged yes i think that is a bit long. They tend to feel very lazy with that box.

4s is also a very old box. Where did you find one? To make the longest possible box on a 020 we use the 5th gear form a 4s and with a 3.69 diff make a box that is geared for 316 km/h at 7800 rpm.

OMG! Those are long ratio's!

Like Panic said... too long!

You need FFZ ratios...

Long ratio's are terrible! Car will be lazy and heavy on fuel! You wont even make it in DBN up the long hills on our highways... have to keep changing down!

I had a 0.75 5th on a 3.94 Diff and even my ABF couldnt make it!

I once got passed by a 1.6 Auris up a hill! It was extremely painfull!

I then switched to a 0.89 5th on a 3.94... as well as having the shortest 1st to 4th ratios... WHAT an F1 shifting beast of a Golf it was!!!

Thanks for this info as this was my intention, currently have a dgg box which is identical to the ffz and problem is that revs sit too high on 5th gear (3750rpm @ 120km/h) also my gearbox is very noisy and had its days which is why i want to get another box.

You can use an ffz or dgg and just swop the 5th gear out for something longer.

hmmm, to be honest the 4s with a short diff will make a very nice box. The gear ratio spacing is pretty good.

Smoke, IIRC you were sitting at 3000 at 120kph right? That would mean you had a 3.67 diff.

This is now what i have chosen to do,ffz/dgg with a 5th gear ratio between 0.75 - 0.85
I think 0.80 would be perfect?

Yes, well done! 3000rpm gave 120kph on the speedo... not true speed.

I had a 3.94 Diff with the diff bolt kit too.

It was terrible! I had a short 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th gear... great acceleration and the revs just stayed in powerband! It was awesome... then you switch to 5th gear and the whole tone just changes from screaming to a low deep droning

Please! DONT go 0.75!!!! The gap between 4th and 5th is just too big and you will hate it! You have to rev the car high up in 4th before changing to 5th or the car just battles! and you go from a a GTi killer to losing to those big heavy Corolla's up the hills!

Its the most pathetic feeling in the world! and at that moment, there is nothing you can do about it!

If you have DGG now, then you will get 120kph from 3500rpm and you already have the 0.85 5th on a 3.94 diff.

Which in my opinion is perfect! When I changed from that stupid long 5th, I actually went way shorter on the 5th to a 0.89... and let me tell you... THAT is a beast of a car! It runs to 200km/h like nothing!!!

Just go with an FFZ or DDG as is and be happy with it... its a bullet proof box and comes with upgraded Diff bolts from factory! Learn from my school fees paid! Long 5th's are a bad idea! UNLESS you have a Turbo...
If you are absolutely certain you want a long 5th... Go with NOTHING longer than a 0.80 5th on a 3.94 diff. (I still say NO) But it is your car...

I think you had the longest box in the world on your red MK2, we were doing some crazy speeds and you still had 5th gear to go

I think this was 10 years ago already...Jeez time flies.

Had the ff box. First with a 1600 motor. Nightmare. Then with a 1800. Mmmm, little better. Then the 2.0. Man, what a joy. But, the box took a lot of strain over the years, and 4th and 5th started moaning. Took the box out and fitted a ffz. Nice, but i hate the 4th and 5th gear. At 200 it sound's like the motor wants to take off,... like a plane - screaming.

So, ff box is going for an overall and back into my woerie.

My wife's 1800 polo - ffz box. My personal feeling, nice up to 3rd. 4th to a little short and 5th ......( that brown stuff that stinks)
Gonna replace the the 4th with the 5th, and have a longer 5th fitted.

to be honest i quite enjoy my long ratio box i got from Torker, but to be honest that 0.75 will be a bit of a stretch...

i have all the gears of the FFZ box and the Diff of a AEN box, i made 67.3hp and 118nm with it at Panic's dyno last year with a 1.8 Carb motor. It has very nice long legs and with the new 2.0i i'm enjoying it more!

but one thing you need to take into account is tyre size also 10mm wider on the tyre and everything changes...

heres my chart with my Ratios.

for a editable chart you can click here to download the Excel sheet and play with ratios and tyre sizes and see the difference.
