K04 Hybrid? Exposing the K04, Introducing the K04R

Post by Zubair »

Many have been wondering howcome certain K04 cars are able to run almost a second and 10km/h faster on 400m Tarlton. Well simple logic dictates more airflow, more Bhp, but how? No its not software related

Imagine having the spool up of a K04 and the top end power of a GT or T3/T4?

Interested?

Heres one of just a few examples going around, be prepared for more Frankenstein Hybrids:

K04R – 400HP Billet Compressor wheel -- R7000.00 ex vat
K04R – 400HP Billet Compressor wheel, TurboDirect designed, and CNC machined billet compressor wheel upgrade for Focus ST, OPC, GTI, S3, MPS etc Sold as complete turbo exchange unit Rebuilt with brand new rebuild kit, and DUAL PLANE VSR balanced to 160 000RPM – R7000.00 ex vat

Naa its quite pleasant with a K04 for daily commuting. If I ever upgrade the turbo it won't be a toy like a K04R.

Yep,there are plenty guys, even MR Turbo. Its really quite simple, as long as the compressor wheel matches the turbine shaft diameter, you have a large range of compressor wheels to choose from. So one guy might have a K04/2871 and another a K04/3076 and so forth. The only issue here is generic maps from software downloaders won't work. You will require a custom tune from a real tuner as hybrids have different flow rates.

yip, tuners can do this now. they actually been tuning "custom" maps for a while for these types of turbos. In fact most tuners locally do it, they are the few that cant get it right but when they do its another story alotogether.

so you do a KO4 conversion, then change the compressor wheel to 3076, stock internals wont cope will they?

Exactly...so are we saying that these K04R kits ill make the same power say on a GTI that a conventional Gt28xx turbo would have made?
Also how reliable are these converted turbo, how is reliablity effected?

G6's so far from what I've read have the better internals, so TSI is okay. No idea how a K04R aka K04 Hybrid aka Frankenstein aka Cheater K04 will affect an FSI motor.

One thing which most of you haven't thought about is, guys are boosting 1.6-1.8 bars with std K04's, anything more and the efficiency falls off the map, with the hybrids having higher flowing compressor wheels, I can foresee 2.2 bar maps. So it not only spools like a K04 and makes more power at the same boost, it can boost even higher. Direct injection helps here.

But now there shouldn't be a K03 and K04 class, cause you cannot tell, so if your car has a turbo, its in turbo class, stop whining cos you gona be lining ip against Golf 1's with turbo's 4 times larger than KO4R's

they possibly could if you limit the torque but most okes use forged bottom ends to run these types of turbos

The only things is that you still cannot absolutely prove that certain cars making huge numbers out of "Stock" K03 or K04 turbo's are actually hybrids of some sort. However their is now a reason for people to question a little more. You know the saying..."When it sounds to good to be true it normally is"

I don't see any issue with guys running these hybrids, but the issue is when they claim stock turbo setups so they fall withing a certain class at dyno events or other events

this changes the game completly.

But the question of the longetivity remains. Will a KKK housing manage with the boost being pushed through here? Does tubo direct give you a guarentee of some sort?

Its a cheaper option then GT but for 7k a pop and giving in my perflectly working ko4 - ill pass...
