Race seat - modify to use existing rails and seat belt

Post by sjs »

Hi,

I was given a second hand race seat from a friend.
This race seat was bolted to the car floor in his car.

I would like it to be interchangeable with my standard seat and to use my standard seat belt.
So when I take part in a VW club event / Supertrax day I won't get flung out of my seat!
I would prefer the standard seat as a daily though.

Would it be possible to weld the "base" of a standard seat to the race seat (it has a flat metal base) or are there better options?

I will post pics soon.

Thanks.

In my .com I got hold of a pair of old seats and cut just the base off to make up a 'bottom' that could be bolted onto the seat and then fitted into the car in the standard mounts. The hardest part was making the frame up in such a way that the seats could be mounted low enough so your head didn't bash the roof

As for the belts they are probably the most crucial part of the install. The shoulder straps need to be parallel and not curve up or down. I found that mounting a bar between the rear shocks (a descent one) was ok (but not perfect). The lap belts were easy, the left mounting eye just screwed into the frame where the std receiver bolts on, and the right one screwed into the hole where the inertia reel bolts to the B-Pillar, and i never had a crotch strap to worry about. I was even able to retain my normal seat belts for day to day driving so I didn't always need to be belted in with the harness the whole time.

I took pics, but over time they've been lost due to PC's and laptops crashing

Just remember as with anything, what ever you do to mount seats and belts is safety critical, and ultimately it's going to stop you getting very badly injured or killed should it go pear shaped

I've just completed my seat frames for my Formula Design seats (on std Golf rails) - I'll post up a picture when I get home...

Pic as promised - I positioned the straps front on top and rear underneath to get the seat to lean back a bit (tops are level front to back), I'm using the original GT's seatbelts.
