Golf VI LED rear lights

Post by Belix »

Hi folks
Anyone know anything about OEM LED lights for GTI and R20? Looks damn nice IMO, but can find precious little info on them. Only one ebay seller that I can find for an unbelievable € 559,00. Also seems not to be a simple PnP operation as onboard computer seems to think light bulbs have blown.
Image
The little info I've found online seems to mean this may, apart from the price, be far to technically challenging...

Just hang on a while. I'm sure Hella will make it available to the general public shortly.

Give it time, the car is too new for easy fix mods

Thanks for the part numbers!

My understanding - you'll need the four light clusters, obviously, and to make sure you have the RHD ones. Not sure yet (not taken possession of my car yet) whether RSA GTis have fog light or not, as that there seems to be fog light, and non-fog light versions too.

Next you need to buy or make an adapter for the wiring plug.
Don't quite understand if the whole lighting cluster is only the three wire plug going in, or if only one of the connectors required adaption, but either way, it seems you need one adapter per light cluster. Suppose one wire each for brake, night light and one for either indicator, fog and reverse. Earth would be car chassis, so yeah, guess it only those three...

Last - and this is the bit that worries me - because the LEDs draw less power, it seems the controller thinks there are dead light bulbs, and pops up warnings.
Seems you need to use VAGCOM to change one entry. Having never even had a car advanced enough to "program", let alone actually trying to do, and of course not having the tools or programs, this will be the tricky bit unless some good hearted fellow vwclub member has the tools already and will help me out in return for a frosty.
Would prefer VW to do it themselves, but the technicians I've met thus far are not too adventurous, and I wonder if I could find a dealership willing to do it anyway.

At any rate, I'll see whether VWSA can a) source the parts, b) how much they want to rip me off for them, then work down the list.

Would really like to do this, the standard lights are really not pretty IMO. It also seems the lights are optional in some other markets, so wonder why not RSA as the cars are fully imported to be of my knowledge anyway...

its just a matter of ticking a box via vagcom to let the controllers know that you have LED lights installed, thats it. You could order the wire plug adapters or other ones which then wont require you to cut anything. Thats the route I woudl go IMO. Very much worth it, these lights are really good looking.

Hmmm, dealer states parts do not physically fit, but can't imagine VW would remould bodywork just for new tail lights...and no-one else complained about fit issues. Pity, would have been happy to pay a bit extra to have dealer install. Means I gotta find someone kind enough to help with coding...

Gonna confirm that UK original (ie non LED) part numbers the same as ours first just to be 100% sure.

Seems there are two versions available - a lighter red for GTI and GTD, and a "cherry red" for R20 models. UK site gives slightly different part number from those Johnjm posted, so want to be 100% sure. Would imagine we would have same spec as UK?

edit, ok think right hand traffic refers to LHD cars, and left hand traffic refers to RHD. If my assumption is correct, the part number do tie up, but I need a screenie scrolled further down to confirm

1x 5K0 945 093 Q (Inner Light)
1x 5K0 945 094 Q (Inner Light)
1x 5K0 945 095 L (Outer Light)
1x 5K0 945 096 L (Outer Light)

TMTuning's service is good, Here's a link for tails, they also have a code-box to stop error codes and a harness adapter:

you dont need the code box if you use vagcom to code the controller.

Your part numbers look right:

The LED lights are the same size as the normal ones - the dealer is once again too lazy - but personally I wouldnt let them touch a retrofit like this with a 10foot pole.

had some bad experiences?

Looked at the parts they had - seems to be right so not sure what they're on about being not able to physically fit...

Not bad experiences, its just that I would think that someone like you or me are more qualified for a retrofit like this. Plus vagcom is much more user friendly to use than the VAS system they use. They wont be able to code the central elec controller for you I reckon, assuming they even attempt a retrofit like this. If you need any help you can give me a shout. Whats the pricing like on them?

Thanks much appreciated!

Hoping to do some more negotiating with them, started at almost R7K!!
Will see how low they come otherwise will look overseas. Can get a set with adapters for a still mad GBP400, but have not had the best luck with postage, so not sure whether to risk it. At least if I can get from dealer I have them in my hands.

SteveP in the UK on http://www.mk6golfgti.co.uk/forum/ can source the lights "relatively" cheaply at GBP500 including adapters and insured postage. Likeley to be liable for some VAT/Customs on top of that. Then it's just the coding!

For those who asked:

The Parts: -

1x 5K0 945 093 Q (Inner Light)
1x 5K0 945 094 Q (Inner Light)
1x 5K0 945 095 L (Outer Light)
1x 5K0 945 096 L (Outer Light)

4 x 7N0 972 703 - LED Connector Housing
4 x 191 972 713 - Standard Taillight Connector Housings
6 x 000 979 150E - Repair Wires for LED Connector
6 x 000 979 129 - Repair Wires for Standard Taillight Connector

Tools Needed: -

Soldering Iron, Solder & Heat Shrink
Cutters
8mm Socket Set with extension bar

Making the Adapters

The connections are a simple Pin 1 on Standard Taillight Connectors to Pin 1 on the New LED Connectors. The wires need to be cut down to a few cm long otherwise they just get in the way.

Coding via VCDS - 09 Central electrics, then coding - long coding helper --> byte 18 set to 4

You mean he needed no coding? Weird, their should be a warning light because the LEDs draw much less power and the car thinks all the light bulbs have burnt out.
Mine should be here within 10 days!!

Belix , Please keep us informed. I am very keen to do this but have been put off by the error code story . Have seen a few pics and I think it should have been an option on the GTI  . Also in love with those r line wheels . Not sure what they called though .

Will do
Well got around to making the adapters (not my best effort - if making them, be sure all three wires are 100% the same length or things look a bit kak!).

Image

The inner lights changed easy peezy, just two 8mm nuts.
Image

As for the outer light...Bugger me, the friggin spring is STIFF. It works like a bayonet bulb as far as I can tell, but to get enough pressure on the thing to get it all the way down... and when you do manage, the whole damn fixture twists as one, the base if not held in place to make life easier.
I've still not managed to remove the outer lights... :bang: :bang:
Image

(Edit, it's NOT the bayonet part! see below)

Was trying to undo the wrong part. The whole pin unscrews - no need to play about with the bayonet type thing and spring!! Hell of a lot easy too! As below, remove the whole pin, don't muck about with the spring bit (think that's just there to apply the right amount of torque)

Image

Out lights removed Whoohoo! Note on re-install, be sure to slot the light pins into the black guides or the lights will not align properly...
Image

New light's vs old
Image

and new side vs old
Image

Yup, I know the outer right light looks like it's not energised, but it's ok.
Image

All finished!
Now just to sort out those pesky error codes...

So far the first codes I'll try will be 04 and 15. I'd love to find a code that allows all lights to come on when braking but will see what happens.
