mk4 jetta coilover installation

Post by georgie »

'm getting mixed opinions everywhere regarding the removal of helper springs, rear perches and bump stops when installing coilies. Coilies are Jom bluelines. Wont be dropping to the point where the swaybar needs to come out.

If you not going very low then leave the helpers and that in

Just trim the bump stop in half.

Left everything in. The guy who fitted them forgot to trim the bump stops :bang:

The drive isn't bad at the moment though. Does trimming the bump stops make it softer or firmer?
Can i get to the bump stops without removing the entire coilover again?

Another thing, the car isn't that low, but i get heavy chassis scraping over certain speed bumps. Sounds painful

I suppose this is as low as i can go on the 17's then?

Time to learn the speedbump shuffle... :troll:

It depends how high the speedbumps are? I navigated CPT with my car quite easily last december... and I'm FAR lower :hi:

Ja, I know about getting over speed bumps lol. I'm just surprised by how low the chassis is on the mk4 compared to the ride height.

It's actually slightly lower than it looks in this pic, but still not THAT low.

Its over certain speed bumps only, not the basic rounded ones. Those high flat top ones :bang:

What effect does cutting the bump stops have on the ride? Does it get softer or harder?

Wondering if its worthwhile take the coilies out again to cut them.

So you're gonna rather ride on the solid rubber piece? And I dont mean the ride in general gets softer, that will stay the same.

It just means when you ride through dips in the tar or a rough road, your car wont essentially bottom out.

The ride is fine most of the time, but i get quite a bounce from bumps in the road, which is why I wanted to firm it up a bit. I dont think i'm low enough to be bottoming out. Cant get any lower on the 17's without causing more headaches as I can just about squeeze a pack of smokes between the chassis and the ground. And no im not changing my wheels yet

Nice ride.

These cars need the low , but you might want to invest in a decent sump guard.

The OEM plastic guard does nothing. I believe the 1.6 Mk 4's came with a metal guard.

Can anybody confirm this ?

Ok so it seems like the 2.0 Mk 4's came with the proper metal skid plate.

Now I just need to find one in a scrapyard , unless we have some one who can get them made at an engineering shop.

I am sure there would be decent demand for a cheaper alternative to the VW one ?
